Do not dis a self-appointed regular, however they have chosen to define regular today. If they have more posts than you, they are better than you. Do not be rude, say please and thank you, and when you get to be their post-age, you can be self-important and judgemental too.

I think that be modified to say "stay away from raw coins if you don't know anything about coins or coin collecting".

Do not be afraid to ask any question, no matter how silly you may think it is...

But you should do a search of your question first, because some topics tend to repeat.

Stay away from raw eggs and pork on eBay and anywhere else.
  • Except for RAW proof sets from 1964 and up,please study those night and day so you may buy them cheap when they appear.

Do not buy on impulse. See what your options are before you buy. That way you won't go to the next table or dealer and wish you hadn't spent your money.

    Bonus:

Do not spend beyond what you are willing to lose.

Buy a few books on coins and really read them! Visit a local coin shop. Buy what you like, fads change all the time, but if you like what you purchased you will take the time to learn more about it.
  • MrEurekaMrEureka Posts: 24,253 ✭✭✭✭✭
Do NOT buy coins that are expensive enough to hurt you.

Do NOT buy a slabbed coin unless you are prepared to crack it IMMEDIATELY after you buy it. (Think of slabs as training wheels for newbies.)

Do NOT keep coins that you are not COMPLETELY happy with. Expect that most of your early purchases will not last.

Do NOT sell your discards at auction. Instead, sell them AT A COIN SHOW or COIN CLUB MEETING. The buyers will educate you.

This approach will force you to learn, fast. When you're ready, you can move up to a more expensive and more challenging series.

Disclaimer: this advice, as the thread title requested, is for newbies:

Do not let your urge to add to your collection outstrip your level of knowledge and your finances.
Do not ignore the wealth of knowledge available from the books that have been written.
Do not miss out on the camaraderie of knowing other collectors.
Do not pass up the chance to look at coins at shows and auction lot viewings. This will improve your grading skills.
Do not ruin your coins by storing and caring for them improperly.
Do not buy raw coins that seem to be big bargains, no matter who is selling them, how large their ads are, or what organizations they belong to.
Do not buy coins advertised on TV shopping shows or in the Sunday newspaper supplements, or in offers with your credit card statement.
Do not buy junk, even if it's 50 years old, because 50 years from now it will be 100-year-old junk.
    Do not clean your coins.
Do not buy what is "hot".
Do not rely solely on what a seller says regarding value, rarity, condition, or investment value.
Do not begrudge dealers their right to earn a living.
Do not assume your coins can be sold quickly for their true value.
Do not carelessly discuss your interest in coins with others.
Do not be discouraged by all the things you should not do. Remember this is a hobby, and you ought to find enjoyment in it!

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Do not let anyone tell you that what you like is not worthy of collecting.
  • FairlanemanFairlaneman Posts: 10,423 ✭✭✭✭✭
Find a live in person mentor that you can discuss coins with. Educate yourself in reguard to what you want to collect. Trust yourself after learning about the coins you want to collect. Above all proceed with patience. Most coins have thousands and thousands of examples available. Tomorrow just may bring you a better example at a cheaper price.

Opps...This is a Do List, not a Do Not List.

Eeew, speakin' of lumpy milk... I just picked up a coffeepot from behind our concierge desk that had once had hot chocolate. It now has lumpy, curdled cold chocolate. image

Do not loose your sense of humor.
When the day is over, they're just coins.

  • Let's see...

    Do not:
    1. forget to have fun.

    2. let a disagreement ruin the hobby (or the forum) for you. There are many wonderful and generous people here even if you don't agree with them on everything.

    3. post impulsively. The person you call an hairy, ignorant troll today may have the coin you want tomorrow.

Hamsters oy! Why collect they the taco.
  • ..."do not" may not be as important as "do". With that in mind may I add...

Do watch where you walk, so as not to step into anything , uh, unpleasant.
Do watch what you say, so as not to pollute the atmosphere.
Do watch what you spend this month, so as to have "smoe" left to spend next month.
Do keep your ears open, if nothing else, so air can get to your brain.
Do remember that, "one man's holey oldie is another man's holey grail."
    (already been said here, but...)
May you all have good luck and fun in everything you do.

DO NOT be afraid to buy raw coins on ebay. Find a good seller or two, or three and stick with them.

DO NOT get discouraged because you can't afford to buy coins that are priced like a new car. Buy what you can afford and learn all you can about the coins that you like and can afford.

DO NOT get caught up in the mindset that coin collecting is all about the bucks your coins may or may not be worth.

Do not believe the above post. The process of posting imparts certain god-given knowledge and wisdom on the poster. Some sort of knowledge quantum osmosis, I think.image
