I've been going through the roll of 85-O Morgans that I mentioned in an earlier thread. I have duplicates (or more) of everthing. It's pretty cool because I can compare unique features on multiple coins. There are three VAM-2's (double 5 in date) that all have odd dots and gouges in the same places. I've got five more with matching die gouges on the reverse. I like it.
This post is about a pair of coins in the roll with a huge dot in the field in front of Liberty's head. The obverse has a couple of large cracks. One hangs off her nose and reconnects to the chin. Another comes off the forehead and heads to the left rim. In the middle of this crack, there is a huge round dot.
Not sure if this is a dot that was in the die before the crack, or if the crack left a round raised chip. Also a die gouge in I of LIBERTY. The lower obverse and other parts of boths sides are overpolished.
The reverse has a gouge going down from the eagle's right wing. It's great having two matching coins. I couldn't find anything in the VAM book or updates about a dot on the obverse. Any ideas?
