I have actually spent farthings (as pennies) and shillings (as 10ps) on purpose before... it's been a fair while, but i think i should drop a few more farthings into circulation.

I used to dump the occasional farthing into circulation in the hope of inspiring potential collectors.
Not because i wanted to rip a shop off by 1p... ultimately it's probably the same thing, but really the shop would be making a bit of a profit, say a circulated farthing sells for 10p, they've made a 9p profit from that! So they should actively welcome it!
