World Bank Notes anyone?

I know this is somewhat OT, but I did not see the harm in posting a simple question... how many of you collect the Bank notes of your favorite country? I am curious because so many Countries have currency that is as attractive as their coinage. I like currency from several counrties including the Philippines (1903-1945) France, Germany, Mexico and Australia.

  • I collect post WW2 Greek banknotes, or rather I have a small but nice collection of them , since I rarely add anything anymore. Greek banknotes are important for me to understand the economic history of the country, as no coins were minted between 1930 and 1954. I used to have a nice type collection of British notes too, but that's already gone now, thank goodness, the less I have the better I am.

I have quite a sizable collection, as I detailed in another recent thread. I still pick up a few that strike my fancy, but most of what I'm actively collecting at this point are Philippine Guerrilla Notes.

I've actually moved into collecting more notes than coins lately.. it comes in phases. When there is a logic to the madness, I usually go for WWI era stuff, some WWII also, but not much from after that time unless there's a backstory to spark my interest.

I started a thread recently on some Chinese notes I got, something I know absolutely nothing about.

A lot of nice stuff out there. Maybe we can work on bringing a world flavor back to the currency forum on CU image
  • For me its chinese paper currency pre 1950 ive got about 1000 notes in boxes and in folders. Only about 10 years of collecting. It sucks to live in this land locked Indiana and collect chinese currency seeing as how we have suck a large chinese population here. It makes it so easy to find any.

    Askari:

I have located some of the Philippine guerilla currency in the 1942-44 time frame. Nothing that I believe is that rare, but it is really historically significant.

Do you collect the 1944-46 issues that have victory printed on the reverse? I came across some that also have Central Bank of the Philippines printed on the reverse which is kind of interesting.

I got a couple dozen French assignats or territorial mandats, a fair number of the 1798 Repubblica Romana bills and the odd Austrian piece from the 1800 or 1806 issues. I've also got one of the French counterfeits of the Austrian 1800 5 Gulden and some Polish (1794 issue), Portugese and Papal State stuff. It doesn't cross my path that often and I'm usually broke from buying medals so I have to let it get away. Still waiting to win the lottery so I can pick up some Grand Duchy of Warsaw paper... image

I have some of the Victory notes -- as well as the Japanese Invasion Money (JIM) -- but I've mostly concentrated just on the guerrilla notes. Just to give you an idea, I have over 300 guerrilla notes, including a rare provincial. For the most part, I've not picked up that many of the common notes. In fact, I have a number of rarities and have several unlisted varieties. By comparison, I have only 14 of the JIM for the Philippines.

  • I started with whatever really struck me as different but as time goes I've zeroed in on Colombian coin and currency (native son after all)...but will still pick up interesting designs/pieces.
  • I have a few scattered notes but never really took an interest in them. I have enough to do keeping up with my coins. image

Here are a couple of my most recent currency acquisitions. The first is a Scottish £20 Year 2000 Commemorative note featuring Robert the Bruce:

Here's an even harder to find (and in CU, no less!) St. Pierre & Miquelon 1 New Franc on 50 Francs, from the 1960 Provisional Issue:

I collect polymer notes from such places as Australia and Romania. In fact, I formed a group on Yahoo devoted to this area. If anyone is interested, just go to my website and click on the LINKS page and there will be a link to get to that site. Now, I buy and sell all notes, and I have been particularly busy on eBay buying some material at decent prices. Just today, I received a couple of notes from a dealer - a 1985 Czechslovakia 1000 Korun in AU and a 1990 Costa Rica 1000 Colones in Unc! image

If anyone wants to see some beautiful notes, there is Ron Wise's World Paper Money Website. Probably the biggest paper money site online right now!
