Definitely not legal. They don't have copy on them. Or, they are not actual size and the seller is not disclosing that.
  • wayneherndonwayneherndon Posts: 2,356 ✭✭✭
Actually, the seller does state the diameter is 24 mm (current quarters are 24.3 mm).

Look again ... the coin is stamped with "COPY" on the obverse ... it is a little over half way down in the auction where they show the obverse and reverse together side by side.

The guy tried to include a copy of the COA in the auction. Note the big blank area in the middle of listing. Right click on it and view the source. You can tell he's trying to link to the COA which is on his hard drive. I asked him to email me a copy of it. I'll post it here if he does.

  • Puerto Rico State Quarter PROOF PR-70!

Beware of the fake PR Quarters. These are the REAL THING and come with a genuine COA to Prove it!

The 1932D Washington Quarter is now worth over $24,000 in MS-63 condition, and there were 436,800 made. You are going to get a quarter in PR-70 condition, and there are ONLY 2250 EVER MINTED. It is mind-boggling to think how much these coins could be worth in a few years!!

    image

There are only 2250 of these coins that are produced. Only a few thousand people know about these coins, and that is what make these coins so inexpensive. Just think if a few MILLION PEOPLE knew about these coins, the price of one could exceed $10,000!!!

For every 5 Puerto Rico State Quarters that you buy I will give you a Mercury Dime. The dime(s) that you will receive are in VF to M.S. 65

    Count on VF.

Huh, that's so well done I missed it! I've been under bright lights most of the evening. With the copy there, perfectly legal to sell.

It looks like most (if not all) of the feedback is from prior dutch auctions of these "coins". One even complains about them being copies.

  • He sure seems vague that the coin is a COPY andbot an actual coin. I see that now on the forhead of washington where it is stamped but he doesnt say any thing in his description about it.

    Seller statement:
On the reverse side of the coin there is the word copy in George Washingtons hair. This is there because if you read above, the bill was not passed that allowed the minting of 2 extra state quarters. So another mint decided to mint the coins. These are the coins that you will receive.

Another mint decided to mint the coins. Good thing they decided to put "COPY" on the...the...thecoins.

<< <i>I dunno, but I desperately want one of those. They look so cool. >>

I agree, that's easily the best looking design for a "state" quarter I've ever seen.

I want P.R. to become a state now just so the can possibly make that quarter
  • There was another of these coins on ebay the other night. I emailed the seller and got into a bit of an arguement with her due to the picture in the listing I basically accused her of using a photoshop program to enhance the picture, due to the clear details of the coin except in Washington's hair. Puerto Rico Quarter auction. She did state in the auction description that the coin "has the word copy subtly embeded in Washington's hair. She claims she didn't use the program on the picture, and "that it was a picture from the mint that made the coin."

    My a$$ it was.
  • Oh yeah, there was nothing stated about the diameter of the coin. So who is messing with who here?image

nice place to hide "copy" I missed it too. This may the only way to ever get one as according to Coinworld, that the Senate let the bill die for DC, PR and other territories getting quarters for 2009 after the house passed it.... They are "State" quartersimage

Seller didn't pull it, eBay did!
  • wayneherndonwayneherndon Posts: 2,356 ✭✭✭
I reported it two times. One for wrong category (copy in US Coins) and another for representing a Copy as "real" and "genuine". Maybe one of those reports was what got it pulled.
