Tom Brady SP Authentic #118 - why?

What exactly is the appeal of this card that makes it the most expensive of Tom Brady's seemingly endless myriad of 2000 rookie cards? 'Cause of the upcoming Superbowl, it's like the hottest modern card on eBay right now. Granted the #'d issue of 1250 makes it legitimately scarce, but there are also other Brady RC cards from 2000 that's just a scarce if not more so (the Playoff contenders come to mind).

I've just started collecting again so I've missed quite a bit of what's going from recent years, but there doesn't seem to be any real rythme or reason for this one.

  • Well, compared to other Qbs like Manning, Vick, Mcnabb etc. Brady didn't really have a ton of fancy rookie cards made early in his career because he wasn't expected to be a superstar. Not that this explains why this one particular card is so expensive, but since Brady doesn't have several very hot cards like Manning, you have to expect his one hot card to be really hot if that makes sense.

    three words:

    S P Authentic

I have been down this road before, wouldn't you rather have a contenders autograph of Brady versus an unautographed SPA card?? Even if there
are more than 1299 Contenders, doesn't the auto count for something??

Obviously others don't agree. Don't try to understand it, just accept it.

JS is correct - SP Authentic usually is the preferred RC in football, but Contenders is catching up IMO. And yes, I would rather have an auto RC from Contenders of Brady than just a numbered RC from SP. That card (2000 Contenders #144) is hot right now as well.

I'm just trying to understand the logic behind all this and evidently there just isn't any. I have both Contender RCs (Rookie and Championship Ticket). You'd think these cards would be 10x more than the SP Auth., considering the Contender cards are autographed and that the Championship one is limited to only 100 made. The SP Auth isn't even a very good looking card. Bland colors and a horrible design.

Well in 1998 the Contenders are the ones to have. But you have to consider that most collectors go for the SPA from 98 because the Contenders are so rare. With the Vick- his SPA RC is also autographed so it has everything going for it. I remember pulling a Brady SPA back in 00 and I got mad and threw it on the counter because when I pulled it I knew it was a bum but I thought it was Marc BUlger (who was also a bum at the time) who I liked because he is a WVU guy- I was really ticked when it was just this Brady guy lol.
  • I still have my 2000 SP Rookie set. 35 PSA 10's and 45 PSA 9's. The stupid prices of the Brady card is making it real HARD for me to still love it! I'm thinking it's time to go! I started collecting 2000 SP's when they came out. I was selling PSA 9 Bradys for $75! I sold some PSA 8's for $45-50. I could take those 8's bust them out and sell them for $500 or more. I think some of the attraction of SP is they really produce some of the higher round rookies. If you take a chance on a high draft choice, Brady or Delhomme, Rattay, etc. it could be a potential GOLD mine. Like I said, I'm almost over it. I also agree, there are some quality cards. One of my favs is Bowman Reserve. Totally cool card!

of course you can think of it this way...what would a Montana rookie card numbered to just 1299 be worth?

  • It's all a matter of preference, and the majority of collectors seem to prefer SP Authentic

As many others have stated, it's all about SP Authentic. Similar to bowman chrome in baseball, sp authentic football is the one collectors clamor over. When it's all said and done, it's all about supply and demand, and (at least for the time being) the demand for sp authentic is huge for rookie football cards now. And after seeing the prices the Mannings, Vicks, and Brady's are at, it probably won't change for the 2004 sp authentic, 2005 sp authentic, 2006 sp authentic....
