A few more VAM grades (Economy took just 54 days!)

It looks like all of a sudden my invoices are getting through the system...

Went in today to pick up a different order and was shocked to have them return my 12/7/04 submission as well! This one was a few odds and ends sent in raw, only one of which was previously in a holder. Still no VAM attributions by PCGS.

LINE # CERT # COIN DATE DENOMINATION VARIETY COUNTRY GRADE

1 21827372 1878 7TF S$1 Reverse of 1879 USA VF30 image
VAM 220 tripled-R. Bought as an ANACS VF30. Worried it might go VF25.

2 21827373 1891-O S$1 USA VF30 image
VAM 1A E-reverse. Bought raw as a VF. Expected VF25.

3 21827374 1891-O S$1 USA VF20 image
VAM 1A E-reverse. Bought raw as a VF. Expected VF20.

4 21827375 1895-S S$1 USA AG03 image
No VAM. Bought raw for my grading set. Hoped it might go Good-4. Now I'm still looking for one.

5 21827376 1878-CC S$1 USA FA02 image
No VAM, just a coin for my low end CC set. Expected Fair-02.
When in doubt, don't.

Very nice! Love those 'E' reverse coins.

    Jeff:

I've come to love the E-reverses too, and especially the 1891-O... which brings up a painful old memory:

Back at the FUN show in (I think) 1998 I stumbled across a dealer and his teenage son who was selling his VAM collection. He had two coins I was looking for and wanted a lot -- 1901 DDR Shifted Eagle in NGC-50 and an 1891 E-reverse in NGC-61. I was infatuated with Shifted Eagles at the time so, naturally I bought it instead of the E-reverse. I've had several opportunities to buy AU Shifted Eagles in the years since, but that's still the only Mint State 1891-O E-reverse I've ever seen for sale.

That brings up a good point. I've seen quite a few 1891-O clashed E coins but nearly everyone I've seen is mid-to-low grade or if it's a decent grade, it has been messed with. I think the best example I have is an XF. I believe if I came across a unmolested AU or BU, I would jump all over it with both feet.

The 1891-o E reverse is the most common of them all and is usually found in the VF range. EF examples are out as are AU examples. MS examples are quite rare. I believe there are less than 5 or 10 known.
I found my example years ago raw and sent it off to ANACS and it was graded a 55.
