PSA/DNA cards

If this subject has come up before, please excuse me. I've never had this particular service before, so wasn't familiar with it. All i knew, is that it was for certifying, and i THOUGHT also grading autographed cards. However, i just looked in the latest issue of the SMR, and they had several PSA/DNA cards illustrated near the back of the issue, in preparation for an upcoming sales event. To my surprise, each of these cards only carried the designation "authentic". Granted, the PRIMARY purpose for sending these cards in is to make sure the autograph is not a fake, but just giving it the "authentic" rating would seem to be an injustice to the card's CONDITION. On this basis, there doesn't seem to be much of an advantage of buying one of these autographed cards in NM vs. EX, or lower--you're almost STRICTLY paying for the autograph itself. Does this seem like kind of a disappointment, given the price of having them certified?

    Hi Steve
I have never submitted anything to be holdered but you can get a grade and authenticaton of the auto if that's what you want.

Thanks - now THAT makes sense! In fact, i went to the 'PSA services' section and discovered that the submitter has the OPTION of having a grade assigned or not. From what i could tell, it costs the same either way ($20.). Personally, i couldn't see having the card only marked "authentic" and NOT having it graded too, unless the card was a real dog (way off-centered, or trimmed, or otherwise messed up).

If the card is trimmed, they will mark it that way I believe. Also, to be honest, once a card has been autographed, it may lose some of its "card" value IMO. And now, its based on the auto value more.
In the case of the Newhouser card, e.g., he was a late "veteran" induction into the HOF and his auto is not high end - he signed plenty I believe - so the card may be devalued by the auto - so the most I could get for the card may be the value of the auto.

This is just an example and hypothetical - have no idea what this card is worth one way or the other.
