Coins with lots of die varieties...

I thought it might be interesting to consider some examples of coins that are known to have a large number of die varieties. The early large cents come to mind, with all of the different Sheldon numbers.

Can you think of any coins for which there are an unusually large number of die varieties available?

Buffal nickels have a ton of RPMs, OMMs, doubled dies, die cracks, two feather, 3-legged, 3.5 legged, etc.

  • 1921 Denver Morgan dollars have a stunning number of die varities, 90+ varieities and still counting. Many of them are visible to the naked eye and don't even require a loupe to see.

Washington quarters have lots of very impressive doubled dies if that's the type of thing you like. Most are very reasonably priced considering eye appeal and rarity. I'll second the opinion on the Buffalos, too.

Any of the capped bust coins have enough varieties to keep you busy for years on end.

The Lincoln cent series has the highest number of die varieties out of any series, hands down. There are well over 2,500 different die varieties in the series, of those 1960D has the highest known number of RPMs (I'm up to #155 listing them) and the 1964 cent has the highest number of known doubled dies of any single year (believed to number over 100 different dies).

War Nickel RPM's... I highly doubt more than only a few complete sets actually exist.
