1981 Topps FB Cello box results....

As some of you know, I'm on a quest to open as many reasonably priced boxes from the 70s and 80s, get the cards I cherished as a child in mint condition, then sell the rest off, grading the possible tens and 9s of some of the stars. I just busted a box of 1981 Topps FB cellos (24 pks, 27 crds/pk) from BBCxchange. Here are my results:

- You know how you open a box of, say, 1985 Topps wax and get 6 Charlie Leibrandt's, then think: "Why did I have to get the Charlie Leibrandt box? Why couldn't it be the Mark McGwire box?". Well, it would appear that I got the Joe Montana box. At 648 cards per box, and 528 cards per set, the avg. odds of pulling any one card is 1.22/box. I would've been happy with one nice looking Montana, Monk, and Winslow. I got three Monatana's, one Monk, and one Winslow, all PSA 9 material in my estimation. MY Monatan went straight into a screwdown (the way god meant it), and the others I've scanned for you. These both have centering issues, about 80/20 T-B and 35/65 L-R. The back has a miserable 90/10 T-B, and both have a slightly touched bottom left corner, one worse than the other. I'm hoping for an 8 NQ, but I know an OC is more likely for both. That's ok, as far as I'm concerned, they're gravy. I also got nicely a centered and sharp Largent, Bradshaw x2, and Payton, which all should grade 9. No possible 10s of stars or semis. Depending on what the Montana's and others grade, I estimate I'll be able to get $200-$350 back from the $500 box (I know, I overpaid a little, but after seeing how sharp the cards came out of a 1982 FB cello box, I had to give it a shot.)

Sorry, having trouble making my pics bigger....
  • Centering both of them may be an issue.. Hard to really say without a larger scan

  • 81 is tough for centering. I have a TON of Montana cards i pulled as a kid and most of them have centering issues. The backs seem to be even worse than the fronts.
That is the only reason i have not bought an 81 box, too many centering issues.
Gotta be fun as hell though. Thoughts of GEM Mint 10's dancing in your head. image

  • Tip:

When you scan, lay a dark colored piece of paper on top of the cards so we can see the snow white borders better. Imagine if you didn't get 3 montanas? financially yikes! Good post though, keep them coming. Very interesting.

Yeah, no kidding. For now, I think I'm going to stick with unopened material that isn't price driven by one card. That's the stuff that tends to be overpriced. I may go for 1975 Topps BB or 1984 Topps FB next. There was a GAI 9 '75 cello box that went for way too much, but that's the area I'm looking at. Then again, you never know what kind of temptation will pop up on ebay.

  • Lee - sounds like you and I collect the same things...from what I hear there are those who snub the 70's and early 80's items....but I say more power to you!

I enjoy hearing about your box breaks....keep 'em coming!

Well, there is really no other choice for me. Those are the cards I collected as a kid and those are the players I enjoyed watching. I say collect what you like and who cares what people think.
