1981 topps three year reunion (actually four)

Just thought I'd post this feel free to chime in. Im coming up on my fourth year collecting 81 topps, it was my first year I collected with my father many of you know I massed one of the largest collections of 81s. Do to financial and the way things were going last year I had to bail at like 85% in 9 and better with a 9.32. Anyhow Ive always stated that this set will give you total frustration to do it in 9.

Im an 81 freak and have 30 5000cts to prove it all case fresh. After selling off the grade you all know Ive been back to sorting to the raw being that Im moving in a month Im down to the last 4 5000 cts which I saved for last I bought these from a dealer a 2 years ago it was the hidden piece of the puzzle. I found some cards last night I deemed impossible. I was a kid in a candystore being the first 5000 were all in team order I was throwin card every where looking for the last 20 that I would need to call the set complete in 9 and better even though I dont have the plastic anymore I still have records and pretty sure I can do it over again. I found 15 cards that have haunted me forever so that leaves me with only 5 more to go. But the good part is I have 3 more 5ks to do so maybe my fingers are crossed. Bummer about the deal is I still have to make the set and sorting 200 examples of every card is going to be nerve racking.

I just find this set that tough I know bernie and frank have been at it as long as I have and still cant break the 90% and theyve been there all along. The pops dont show it that tough but its the last 25% in true mint fashion thats the bear. Not to mention with the later 70's you can miss and still get something out of your 8's with 81's your dead in the water. So the amount of product thats been cracked is what astonishes me.

Dunno Id like to hear frank and bernie chime in on this one as well because it is kind of a reunion for me.

  • Hi Gator

You helped me out on some 81's last year....I wanted to tell you how much I appreciated that!

Just curious - if you are ever interested in selling a raw '81 set, or a large group of raw 81's I can go thru (for fun) - please let me know!

I'd be happy to take a couple nice raw sets off your hands!

Thank you very much!....feel free to PM me

  • GATOR, I am filling holes in my run of Topps sets. I could use a nice NM to NM-MT raw set that will go in a binder. Let me know if you could help me out!! Thanks.

  • I bought a bunch of sets in the boom of 1981 and it sucks to see how much little more they are worth
    today than they cost then.

i.e. Beckett paperback 2004 lists 1981 Donruss in NM complete set at 40.00

If I'd only known, I'd have asked my dad for several years allowance ahead of time and bought
more 1967's in 1967. Try pricing that set in NM....

1967and 1973 Topps baseball wantlists (any condition) welcome. Once had the #14 ATF 1967 set. Yet another collector like skylaneflyer, gimel1 who made it to the completion of 1967 only to need the money more than the company of 609 close friends.
Looking for oddball Norm Cash and Cleon Jones stuff, and 1956 team cards
  • That Donruss set is difficult to sell in NM for less than $15 these days. It's sad, I agree. The Henderson alone used to go for more than the set does now. Considering the set is going on 25+ years old, maybe it's undervalued. Then again, maybe no one cares ;-).

  • Sorry to start this off and be gone soooooooo long out of town.

    Jim,

You had your chance at my trammell haha shouldve ponied up. Tram now resides in Franks set. If I find another one I'll let you know. Your second in line behind dgf he took over my tiger set and a stellar one at that.

    Dallas,

Im putting together 5-10 specialty sets pending on how far the gems spread they will go for a premium but well worth it on the top of my head at least 50 tens will reside. Again this is all pending I get them sorted in the next month have alot going on and my eyes are fried from sorting.

As for the price of and 81 set. No not that much interest and for the most part almost everything you open is in the grade of nm. Only reason Ive done so well is targeting the case numbers and staying inside the same run. Undervalued yes I think in mt form. 81 donruss I lovem if I had some extra money to pony up Id be buying all the raw binders I could find on ebay for 25 bucks a shot. I do have a solid set at the moment so no big rush. 81 donruss dgf is the man, Ive seen his raw set truely crazy nothing like it.

But any of you guys looking for some nice raw its going on ebay. Have no time to grade like I said Im moving and will be travelin all summer so have at it. The mini lot is stellar to say the least as for minis go.

    Thanks, Matt
  • It goes without saying, but if you find an extra Nolan Ryan PSA 10 I'd be extrememly interested.
  • Gator

Remember me if you do put together a couple premium sets. I would be interested in one.

    Thanks

    Matt,
I'm really confused! Did we talk about the Tram from your set? Am I going senile?

  • Jim,

You might be it was about 2 months ago. I contacted you and some other board member you got back with me with an offer and that was it. Might have taken it as bogus email I dunno. That or had me confused with someone else for I kept my tigers till last month.

If I remember off the top of my head though you have a really nice 81 9 from me along with the 86.
