How would you grade these Jefferson nickels??

I picked up these two Jeffersons, a 38 D and a 51 D. How would you grade them? I'm not a Jefferson collector but wanted a first year coin.
I only wanted to have the 38 D put took the 51 D too without seeing it. Is it a dog or were 51 D's poorly struck??

  • I would go 64/65 on the 38-D (are those finger prints!?) image . Looks like a nice one overall. Typical on the 51 as poor strikes. I doubt it would go over 63.

First of all, nice pics. I would call the '38-D a 66 unless there is a fingerprint, and the 51-D no better than a 63. The '51-D does come well struck, it's one of the few early 50's nickels readily available with full steps.

  • FWIW, I don't know how to grade to ANA standards, but I collect Jeffs and have seen lots of them in various (slabbed) grades.

38-D MS66 Based on the photo, it looks good to me as I don"t see many ticks/hits. Not FS, but a good strike nonetheless. Great hair detail.
51-D AU-55 (hair detalis look worn) and numerous ticks/hits.
