That reminds me- BMW's hockey inventory does not come up on their site. They had some great stuff. Is it a website problem or did the ghost of Howie Morenz come down and take everything back to hockey heaven??
  • John,

I agree the '36 OPC's are awesome. Especially if you can find them in that condition .....which is unheard of outside of BMW's inventory. The best I have from that set are PSA 5's which don't present near as well as the one's shown here. BMW certainly have the best high-end selection of pre-war hockey I've ever seen anywhere. Their Vezina has to be the finest known ...or close to it.

Thank God every time I see those card they're behind glass and are slabbed. A rather large puddle forms under my chin every time I see their display.

I agree, the '36 are so.. so.. nice. DMD Classics had a bunch it outstanding grades for dirt cheap but I missed out.. they sold before I noticed them.

Tom - Check out the 36 OPC D set on the registry that Mastronet will probably be putting in the next auction.
  • Wow. Between those that the '33 ice Kings they're auctiuoning off they have a couple unheard of homeruns. Do you know where they found these? I assume they're newly graded as well.

While I do not collect much Hockey I do however have some. My favorite set is the 1965 with 1972 a close second. The 72 set I had at one time complete. I kept only a few stars selling most to a long ime Hockey collector that would frequent my shop in the early to mid 80's. The 65 set though I have only a few (around 20) and these two are among my favorites. At one time I collected those with 500 goals (using the year after they achieved that status. i still have those (somewhere) but have neglected to keep current.

Well here ya go: The Plante and Mikita cards are in EX condition as is The Orr card. BTW growing up Bobby Orr was my favorite player. With Espo a distant 2nd!

    imageimageimage

my 3rd fav set is the set with the wood grain 66? or 67 not sure
a few sets from the 80's also appeal to me.
    Good for you.

The '36 set has to be...(how many pages will the flowery catalog write-up be on that one? ).

The IK set probably is fresh slabs too, although I haven't looked at the pop rep. in about a year.
It is possible that's Dr. Z's set on consignment......but I really doubt it.

  • The all-time most beautiful set has to be the 1954/55 Topps. Talk about an amazing inaugural issue! It is too bad that neither Parkhurst or Topps were able to produce a set covering all six teams while the two were in competition.

    Other standouts for me:

1961/62 Parkhurst - some might find this issue a little tacky, but I love the rich coloured backgrounds with the tiled team logos
1968/69 OPC/Topps - are these the only all-horizontal hockey sets?
    1971/72 OPC/Topps - just a really cool design
1979/80 OPC/Topps - beautiful blue bordered design put a premium on high-grade examples
1982/83 OPC - a guilty pleasure for me, as this is one of the sets I collected as a child, they feature a nice simple design with borders and title bars which compliment the team colours
1991/92 Upper Deck - minimalist white bordered design with amazing photography

  • 1984 OPC - Because it is an awsome card with 2 pics of the player on front

1979 OPC - Gretzkys RC year, sensitive blue border cards, and IMO they look beautiful.

First year of Be A Player Hockey Cards (1995?) awsome cards that show the players outside of the rink enjoying activities such as golf and pics of players when they were pee-wees.

  • love to buy sell or trade graded hockey stars only, please to meet you and happy collecting
  • Personally the 73-74 set is my favourite set. Love most of the photos. Dryden's TOPPS #10 Esposito #90 Jean Ratelle great action photo real cool shots. Old time hockey portrayed very well. Design is nothing special and not even codition sensitive with all the huge population increase they certainly are not hard to acquire in PSA 8

  • bedardsavard10

The 73-74 opc is a great set. Two cards I really like are the Gary Unger, great pic of him in full stride taken looking up from the ice surface. I also like the Steve Durbano ( fight card ) one of the very few hockey cards depicting a fight.

My personal favorite design is the 71 - 72 OPC. The Dryden card is awesome.
    Favorite pre-war cards are the 33-34 OPC's.

    Have a great day... Rob..

That is exactly the card I was recalling when mentioning cards from that set. The fight card with Steve Durbano. I only collect stars but that card is very tempting to purchase.

The Durbano card isn't a fight card, I think you're referring to the Phil Roberto card.

  • Good job JrMacdaddy

This is the card love it the best hockey photo ever depicted on a card. I am sure Gary Bettman would like to sue the card manufacturers and there offspring if he could for this degrading card LOL. Great card this card reminds me of Slap Shot with Paul Newman I think the Dave "Killer" Carlson character was based on the this card alone. Or was that Oggie Thorp not sure LOL. If you have not seen slap shot and like hockey I highly suggest you go directly to the store and buy a copy now.

  • Hey Rob & all,

I just picked up a complete 73-74 Topps set-raw. I thought it was an OPC set when I first looked thru the binder because a good amount (about 60%) of the set has the ruff "opc" cut on the right edge. They almost look as if they were partialy cut then pulled apart. Have you ever seen this before with the topps set? I got the set at a great price but I can't tell if the cuts are factory. What do you think? I'll try to scan one later.

    Thanks, Bob
