Question regarding sending paypal outside of Ebay

I just wanted to know if this is a good idea, and also, how can I protect myself?

I am looking to purchase a card in the $400+ range. Paypal is the preferred method of payment that the seller wants. It's not through any auction, just a deal between us.

Is this a good idea or not? The seller does business on ebay and has good reputation.

No reason to hesitate if you know who the seller is. It saves the seller Ebay's 3% on a sale that large. If you aren't sure of his identity ask him to list something unique for a dollar and buy it to confirm his identity.

  • The best protection is to pay with $$ from a credit card, not from your checking account or PayPal balance. This gives the added protection of having your credit card company helping you out if things go wrong.

I had just this problem and PayPal did nothing for me, but I got relief from my credit card company. This made me very glad I hadn't made payment from my checking account.

    Good luck.
  • Although I pay via Paypal I never use my checking account to fund the purchase, I always change the source of funding to my credit card! Much safer!
  • Its all in who the seller is. I've made numerous deals outside of ebay sometimes for a few hundred dollars and been fine. If your really concerned ask them for a phone number and call to verify its legit. Also they are saying "pay via credit card", I always do this as well the only hitch being if you have a paypal balance. If you have a balance you have to transfer it to your checking account before you can override the balance and pay via credit card. I also would ask for insurance and confirmatioin in delivery so there is no issue with that.
