Metal Detecting Forum awards, January, 2005 (come vote in the polls!)

It's still been pretty slow in the MD Forum awards, but many folks are still snowed under or dealing with rock-hard frozen ground, which hampers metal detecting a bit. Of course, there's always the "Wild Card" category for finds made without a detector, including circulation coin finds and pretty much anything. At least we got a few entries in each category this month.

First, the four monthly "quality" awards, awarded by poll.

Best Coin/Token- come vote in the poll

Best Jewelry Item- come vote in the poll

Best Relic/Other- come vote in the poll

Best "Wild Card" Find- come vote in the poll

Next, the two monthly "Quantity" awards, awarded for Most Silver Coins and Most Face Value in US Coins.

Most Face Value US Coins
CROCKofCOINS: $30.34.

Most Silver Coins Found
loditom: 5

    Why so many categories?

Good question. I guess because it's because there are so many sub-disciplines in metal detecting (or TH'ing, for Treasure Hunting, as most call it.) There's coinshooting, beachcombing, prospecting, relic hunting, and so on. It's kind of hard to say what's the "better" find if you're comparing apples and oranges (or, in this case, coins with jewelry, and so on). Some folks go for the jewelry, some for the coins, some for nuggets, others for large quantities of modern coinage. And of course there are many forms of "Treasure Hunting" that don't involve a metal detector or anything metallic at all. This is why we came up with the "Wild Card" category for non-detector finds.

The MD forum, albeit a sleepy backwater sometimes, is tightly-knit and friendly like the Darkside. Even our "competitions" are just a way to encourage one another.

    It's a lot of fun.

(It'd be a helluva lot more fun if I could detect in YOUR neck of the woods, though!) image
