Dip anyone?

Another interesting point made in the PCGS grading handbook is the fact that they accept for grading coins that have been lightly dipped - but not to the point of washing out the mint luster. With this in mind, what is the most reliable, safest brand & method of dipping? I have never tried it before, and I want to start on some common dates to see the results. I seem to remember some folks mentioning diluting a commonly used brand name product by a 1:10 ratio and getting very good results. I have a couple of old Peace and Morgans that would benefit greatly ( I hope!! ) from a little time in the tub. I am anxious to see how the luster appears after the dull gray patina is washed away. Any advice or links to previous threads are appreciated!

I've read a lot about this in the forums. Do a search on "cleaning" "dipping" etc.. and there are some pretty long threads.
    Here's one of them

Most people say either never clean or dip for only a second or two (diluted). Most common dip is e-Z-est. With the dip, the important part is to rinse in water, preferably distilled, for a few minutes.

But if you just need to remove PVC, pure acetone.

With silver coins, you may also want to try the aluminum foil and washing soda method. It cleans without any abrasion or acid. I did a 1928 Peace this way and it went through ANACS without the cleaning details. Link to thread

For non-junk, you can send them to NCS for restoration/conservation (i.e. cleaning). NCS

I have only tinkered with low value coins (except for the '28 Peace) and cleaning them for my own collection.

There was always that funny site about cleaning cents with Taco Bell sauce too...

Like I said, I've only tinkered with this, so anyone feel free to correct any mistakes I've made here. Yes, I realize that to many ANY CLEANING is a mistake.
