question about a mercury dime..

like i stated early I'M NEW! so be gentleimage i have a uc -60 1940 mercury dime .the dime has a w on the front .i notice that the price guide has two other 1940 dimes with the letter d and s .does the w stand for washington? i believe the d is for denver and the s for san francisco ...right? are the w's a dime a dozen ..image

  • the "W" stands for Weinman, the designer of the dime. Adolph A. Weinman. The mint marks on Mercury dimes are on the reverse (back/tails), at the bottom, to the left of the bundle.

    And if you look close enough, it's actually a W with an A under it.

    If you like Merc Dimes you may try this with some. Note that almost all American coins are made with the front and back made so as you flip it over the coin image or person stays right side up. About 50% of all the Merc Dimes I and friends of mine have, have the reverse on an angle to the front. Check yours out and let me know if yours are that way also. cablumenthal@aol.com

  • oh ok ....i see the a now thanks for the pic.image well if i flip the coin over from side to side the image is upside down.if i flip it top to bottom the image is correct . ( did that make cents?)

    Yes you've got it. Sorry I didn't explain which way to flip the coin. Yes I ment top to bottom. As far as I know all American coins are made so that they stay upwards when flipped top to bottom. For some strange reason Mercury Dimes are running about 50% of all the ones I have off the verticle when flipped. How are yours?
