Question about declared value

I am in the process of putting together what may turn out to be my first batch of cards to be graded at PSA. When they say 'Declared Value' what is the typical value that one would use? For example, "The Book" says that a card is worth $800, though a raw card in the same condition as the one you are sending in usually sells for about $250. I would imagine that you would put $250 as the declared value, correct?

I generally put the price I paid for the card or how much I think I would be realistically lose if it gets lost in the mail. Sort of a balancing act. I claim too much, I pay a higher insurance rate. I claim too little, I get screwed should the stuff gets lost or damaged in the mail. I think everyone's different when it comes to this.
  • Ok, so it's up to me, within reason? I ask because I'm trying to see what service level I would need to submit at, since the cutoff between is $500.

    Thanks,

  • I adjust my value to the max of the shipping bracket. so if its 500-1000, my cards are worth exactly 1,000. I do it to minimize shipping costs, and also put the extra money in registered mail. that stuff is under lock and key the entire way to PSA. not 100% foolproof, but as close as you can get. I then usually just add 100 bucks in insurance so they see insured on it and maybe take that much more care of it.

but yea, people do it differently,

  • If the package contents actual value is $1000 determined by SMR, priceguide, etc, but you indicate $3000, you will pay the USPS shipping rate for $3000. However, will you be compensated $3000 or $1000 if the package is lost en route to PSA?

Moreover, what value does PSA ensure, $3000 or $1000? Suppose it's a rare item not found in the SMR and price guides are way out of whack?

Last time I submitted the suggested declared value was PSA 6. But you can put any value you want (as 67SU mentions). You will pay proportionately for insurance and shipping basis your value. Regards.
