1926 "Toned" Peace $1

image Looking for opinions on this Peace $1. Sellers photo's, coin on it's way to me. 50/50 shot with the TPG's? I thought worth the risk. Looks 64 shot 65. I'll post In Hand photo's when the coin is received. Thanks, Lee

Looks good. I have a 21 with similar toning in NGC MS62. I like itimage

  • What keets said. Looks like a nice coin!
  • Not sure. If pressed, I'd have to say AT.

    Here's my reasoning:
    1. Attractively toned Peace $'s are unusual for any date and grade.
    2. For those that I have seen, I've never seen one toned like this.
    3. Colors just don't look right for NT, imho.

That said, I could be wrong. It is a nice looking coin, though. Let us know if you sumbmit it.

As far as grade, it's very tough to say since so much of the grade is lustre on Peace $'s. The reeding marks in the obverse field and tick on Liberty's chin keep it at 64 tops.

  • The colors just don't look right to me. I've seen literally hundreds of toned Peace $ and haven't see a copper colored one yet. I've seen copper color on them -- just not to the degree this coin has it.

I would say it has a shot at slabbing -- 63/64. It might take more than 1 submission though.

My suspicion is AT. This might sound like a copout, but I don't think you are apt to see naturally toned 1926 Peace Dollars (or other dates for that matter) with that type of color.

  • I also think it looks AT, but it could look quite different in hand so I wouldn't write it off just yet............at least it doesn't scream AT to me......it was just my first reaction to the splotcyness of the color.......but Peace dollars certainly don't tone like any other coin.
  • I'd say definitely NT, it's going to look different in hand, bu the colors aren't sitting on the coin; if that makes sense. They actually look like a part of/blend into the coin. It's a beauty.image

Lee, for what it's worth, I just got this because I liked the toning. I would not have known it was AT without the label, and I don't give AT/NT opinions primarily because I haven't a clue. Just FYI...

Sorry if you disagree, and I KNOW I'm often wrong. But, as imaged, those simply are not natural looking colors for a Peace Dollar.

My guess is that the seller's color is off in the picture - I'll bet that the coin was sitting on a white background, not purple. So if the background color is off, so is the color on the coin. Probably not near as golden as the photo indicates.

Although, it looks exactly like your sig line pics - was the Washington from the same seller? If so, are the colors accurate?

I hope the coin is NT.

    Either way I like it.image

There is a seller, dbcoinex, that uses a similar background and format.

I've seen many Peace dollars. The colors are not right. It is a cooked coin!

By the way --- goodluck to the Patriots. This is a hard game for me to watch. I hate the Eagles, cause I'm a Giants fan. And my wife's ex-boyfriend is NE's tightend. I'd hate to see him have a great game.

Oh well, I gotta go with the Patriots. I'd be nice to see the Beagles lose this game after not getting there for the past 3 years!!!

As I type this I'm holding a 1923 PCGS MS65 Peace dollar with colors very similar to the 1926 - mine has a different "look" (the location of the colors) - on the Obv, the blues are in the upper left quadrent and the copper color in the other 3 quadrents - I've seen several others in both NGC and PCGS slabs with similar colors - Peace dollars tend to toned much different than Morgans - some are quite "weird" looking - but my educated "guess" is that coin would grade at PCGS & NGC. - then again, I had a dealer tell me at FUN that during the initial distribution of the Continental Bank Hoard he had personally removed toned Morgans from the mint bags and years later when he sent those coins in for grading, many were not graded. The reason given was: "Questionable toning". He also commented that some of the coins that he removed were so unusually toned that if he had not personally removed them from the mint bag, he would have sworn they were AT.

As for the 26 Peace toned dollar - the splotchy toning that seems to float on that coin seems to have the same look as several slabbed Peace dollars that I own - that said, images can be deceiving - I've seen images that I would say are NT, but the Coin in hand is AT, and conversely an image that looks like AT, but in hand is unquestionally NT. THe bottom line is that in many cases - you simply have to hold the coin in hand to be able to make an intelligent call as to the AT/NT question - the best we can do from an image is make an "educated" guess. In that regard, Mark's guess is probably as good as mine ( or mine's no better than his) - but both are "guesses". image

Purty. Dunno if it's AT or not, but I don't particularly care. It looks nice, and doesn't scream "unnatural" to me.

I've handled a fair amount of peace dollars, but before I chime in, I'd like to first say that I would LOVE to see it in person.

My guess is going to be AT - based mostly on the fact that I've yet to see a Peace Dollar look that way. The dark area on the reverse neat the sun's rays look very real, but the multi coloring around the top is something ive never seen. Almost without exception, every peace dollar I've seen get a rainbow of different colors, does so in a speckled fashion, like the NGC MS62 posted above.

AT NT aside, your 26 sure is a nice looking coin - and again, AT or not, you're not likely to see one that looks like that anytime in the near future.

Now if im completely wrong, and it somehow did grade - I'd call it a 63 or 4.

The uniformity of the color on both sides leads me to believe it to be AT.
