What do you think this 71 munson would grade?

Hello all,

If you get a chance, please check out Ebay auction #5159303470, a BVG 9 for a 1971 Topps Munson. (While you're at it, someone please tell me how to put a link in these posts!)

First of all, does it look clean to you? And second, why is this guy getting such sweet cards graded by Beckett vintage when he'd get so much more from a PSA holder? And why is he saying the book value of a BVG 9 is the same as a PSA 9? (that one's a rhetorical question...I know it's $$$)

Anyway, any thoughts appreciated.

Doug

Beautiful card. Looks like a strong 8 or a 9 to me.
This is for you @thisistheshow - Jim Rice was actually a pretty good player.

I think the centering has 9 written all over it! The surface, corners, edges, and back will tell the story. Too bad that baby can't pop out of our screens for a 1 minute inspection by all !

Looks like it's been trimmed left and right...looks far too narrow to be legit.

It's like the circle of life. Trimmed and sheet cut cards in Beckett holders are a fact of life.

I agree that it looks short L-R.
I placed a PSA 8 scan next to it at the same size and you can see the discrepancy quite easily.

If someone can host it, I put together a jpeg of the two together.

I think this guy is a little clueless about cards anyway - look at this 75 Rose, also in a BVG holder image

    $10,000!

10 G's for a trimmed card from 1975? But, its RARE!

Hardly an allegation, I weighed in with my opinion.

This card in particualar has been a favorite of mine for a very, very long time, and have seen many different specimens. This one (again, to me, and I don't profess to be an expert) looks short left to right. Also, look how much 'play' there is in the holder on the right hand side.

If I were a betting man, I'd give heavy odds that this card has been trimmed.

axtell, great point! I did not see the amount of room that card has to swim inside the holder. But are PSA holders smaller where the card is inserted than BVG??

I've about 7 or 8 cards graded by BGS. The amount of play appears normal to me. It will vary depending on how deeply the crimp was made into the mylar by the person doing the slabbing.

Brian48, thanks for the scans. The Munson looks much more likely to be trimmed, but I really don't trust anything in a BVG, BGS, BCCB, CBGB (whatever) holder, which is why I said that. Especially for what this guy is expecting to sell it for.

Yes, it's much smaller. The BGS slab was designed to house the mylar sleeve that's used as an insert, not the card itself. Here's a Brady RC I have that I'm about to have re-graded (or just re-slabbed) due to the stratches on the holder.

Yeah, I would feel the same way about BCCG, but I've had too many cards come back from BGS/BVG with either evid of trim or tampering to feel that they're completely incompetent. I certainly have more faith in them than say GEM Elite, Pro Grading, or GRA. I think Beckett would gain a lot more credibility if they simply just dropped BCCG altogether.

Rose auction ended at over a thousand dollars, and the reserve wasn't met! My PSA 9 copy of this card was $355, and in addition to me knowing it is legit, it looks every bit as nice as this "9.5". He should have taken the G-note and ran!

It's possible he set the reserve impossibly high either to gauge interest or to sell it outside of ebay and bypass the fees.

I also agree that the card looked trimmed, but comparing two pictures that are different sizes that are not side by side will not reveal it... but when you resize another BVG holder, and you can see the labels are the same size, so you know we're dealing with like to like measurements... you can see just how short the Munson actually is. Pathetic that BVG would holder that card.
