64 Topps football

I was thinking about starting on a graded 64 Topps football set and was wondering if anyone had any opinions on this venture. Are they hard to find? I don't seem to see many raw cards from this year. can anyone lend assistance? thanks al.

GOCAVS - 1964 Topps football is one of my favorite sets.
I was attracted to it because it was the first AFL set to include a large array of players.
Fleer did a great job with the AFL from 1960 thru 1963, but most of their sets were only half the size.

Commons graded in 8 typically go for from 10 to 20 dollars on eBay,
so it's not a terribly expensive set to build, although lately prices seem to have spiked higher.

As for finding raw cards, there's plenty of nice looking 7ish cards out there, but 8ish type cards are tough to find.
You'll have to wade through a lot of EXMT cards to find a few NM-MT ones, but hey, that's part of the fun. image

I've often heard that 64 Topps is the toughest set of the 60's to find. I haven't tackled that set much to date (I'm too busy w/ the 59 set at the moment) but I haven't seen much nice raw out there. I have a PSA 7 Alworth - which I think is the only one I have.

Wolfbear - aren't there some short prints in the set? I seem to recall there are several....

gregm13 - actually a full one half of the 1964 set is short-printed.

Makes it even more fun ... image

By the way, just checked out your 1959 set. Thanks for adding scans ... image

Wolfy - I've added scans to nearly every set. The worst part is getting caught up. Now I scan as they come in the mail - or are returned from PSA. BTW - nice 1964 set image

  • GoCavs,
It is one of the more challenging and frustrating sets of the time period. Nice raw cards do not come up often and slabbed cards in higher grades even less so. There seems to a new player in the set attempting to get many of the lower pops at the moment and is paying 5X SMR or so to have the priviledge. ('s are always steep but the more commons 8's are not to painful. This is not a set you can rush through in a year regardless of budget so plan on taking your time.
It is still unclear to me whether it is widely uncollected because there are so few slabs available or whether there are few slabs because it is uncollected. Many SP's but no real killer RC's. Good Luck on the quest.

  • Fuzz, Greg and Wolfbear. Thanks for the info....I've got about a dozen of the cards already and was wondering if it would be worth continuing on....I will go ahead at a slow pace and see what happens.....in fact one of Wolfbear's items caught my eye already on ebay....I'm relatively new at posting comments in the forums even though I've been registered since 2003. thanks al.image
