Look at the fee schedule for PCGS and you'll see why.

I am glad that these issues are being addressed in the forum. I think that PSA has a large enough advantage in the market that it can weather a storm like this without much problem. Like somone said before, they were put in a no-win situation (as I understand it). So if anybody still wants to jump ship, I will buy any PSA Nolan Ryans you feel like dumping with a smile on my face.

I said "dumping with a smile on my face."

    From the community message board

<< <i>To gregm13 re making sure it doesn't happen again...

We have had four major attempts at compromising our holders in the past 18 years.

    1. 1988-89. A coin dealer named Gary Fernandez sold about $1.8 million worth of coins in counterfeit PCGS holders. The coins were all about one grade off. We turned him in to the FBI and he eventually was found guilty of a bunch of stuff and served 46 months in prison.

    2. 1994ish. A small coin switching scam ala WIWAG. The guys were confronted and stopped. We couldn'd get the authorities interested as the total amount involved was under (slightly) $100,000.

    3. 1999ish, if my memory serves me. A counterfeit card holder scam out of Seattle. These were some Chinese guys and in fact we believe it may have been a Chinese mafia deal. They started out selling counterfeit raw Mark McGwire cards on eBay but soon discovered they could do a lot better with cards in PSA holders. They knocked off the PSA holder but it was somewhat primitive. This time we were able to get the FBI involved and we also sued them. We think they just went back to China and stopped the card deal (probably easier to counterfeit DVDs or software. When we served them in the lawsuit, the address turned out to be a Chinese laundry (no kidding!)

    4. The WIWAG deal. This was a card switching deal. We seemed to catch them pretty quick, even though they were pretty clever in their scam. Perps plead to various felonies.

There have been numerous, usually quite crude attempts at holder alteration. And there's the internet Photo Shop fraud deals where bad guys phoney up scans of holders, but there's not a lot any of us can do about that, except use common sense when buying online.

The bottom line is that we always react swiftly to any attempt to compromise our product. And we always try to get the authorities (hopefully the FBI) involved. And I believe we've been pretty successful at stopping scams and making the bad guys pay.

All we ever wanted was answers and not half of the questions have been answered. But it is nice to see a response. Some of the threads removed were not starting rumors or spreading lie. Just questions , I was a bit ticked about that. Suprised to See Mr Hall Reply and Not Mr Orlando......hmmmm.

Glad to see Mr Orlando didnt lie under oath. I went to the Court Website for San Diego put in the # nothing came up I will have to try again Out of Curiosity if some were to post those would they too be removed? ( the transcripts)

I am so glad that David Hall has stood up and told it like it is. David, you still need to boot about another 45 guys on here and then it will be like it should be. Now that I have your attention, any chance on selling me a couple of those Wilson Weiners that I need to upgrade my set??
On a serious note about this board, I don't care if you collect vintage or modern cards. We all could stand to learn a little on both from other collectors here. It is very obvious who has information to add to a thread and one who is just on here to chat or screw around. This is a discussion board and we should have fun chatting back and forth. We just don't need the guys that consistantly bash PSA, dealers and other board members. This hobby/business is a very small world. There are more people that are willing to help than screw you. Before you go bashing or throwing stones you might want to think about the consequences of what you say.

Court transcripts will not be available online. You will have to pay for those and work directly through the court reporter assigned to the trial. This is one thing that has bugged me about the situation; lots of statements going back and forth without any citation to trial or other testimony. The transcripts, to be cliche, should speak for themselves.

Having not participated in the trial, seen any pre-trial documents, deposition testimony or trial testimony, I am certainly in no position to offer any opinion or comment. By this same token, 99% of the persons who have chimed in on the subject here and on various other boards are likewise in no position to comment considering they have not reviewed the materials.

    Back to collecting.

I would love to see court transcripts posted online...but post both sides...

In fact I urge everyone to read the transcripts (if that's possible somehow), especially the testomony of me and Joe Orlando.

I went down to the crossroads, fell down on my knees.
I went down to the crossroads, fell down on my knees.
Asked the Lord above for mercy, Save me if you please.

I went down to the crossroads, tried to flag a ride.
I went down to the crossroads, tried to flag a ride.
Nobody seemed to know me, everybody passed me by.

I'm going down to Rosedale, take my rider by my side.

You can still barrelhouse, baby, on the riverside.

You can run, you can run, tell my friend-boy Willie Brown.

And I'm standing at the crossroads, believe I'm sinking down.

If you smile at me you know I will understand
Cause that is something everybody everywhere does
    In the same language
I can see by your coat my friend that you're from the other side
There's just one thing I got to know
Can you tell me please who won
You must try some of my purple berries

Wooden ships on the water very free and easy
Easy you know the way it's supposed to be
Silver people on the shoreline leave us be
    Very free and easy
Sail away where the mornin sun goes high
Sail away where the wind blows sweet and young birds fly
Take a sister by her hand
Lead her far from this barren land
Horror grips us as we watch you die
All we can do is echo your anguished cry and
Stare as all you human feelings die
    We are leaving
    You don't need us
Go and take a sister by her hand
Lead her far from this foreign land
Somewhere where we might laugh again
    We are leaving
    You don't need us
Sailing ships on the water very free and easy
Easy you know the way it's supposed to be
Silver people on the shoreline leave us be
    Very free

    GO RIDE THE MUSIC
    C'MON RIDE IT CHILD

    .....sort of a wurlitzer them...no?

  • I have never submitted any card to PSA. Yet I have invested thousands of dollars into purchasing cards in auction houses and from dealers in the past, and will continue to do so in the future. I cant get raw baseball cards in the condition I want where I live. I feel I assist the company by purchasing 9 out of 10 a PSA holder.
Now looking for a 1950 Bowman Baseball Box as pictured below.

I've misplaced my murcerfan post decoder ring.
Even tried singing the lyrics to the songs he posted backwards but I'm still confused.

Any translation would be most welcome ...

    Pix of 'My Kids'

"How about a little fire Scarecrow ?"
  • 1. "Crossroads" by Robert Johnson (or Eric Clapton)
    2. "Wooden Ships" by Crosby, Stills & Nash

    Not sure why, though. image

Both are awesome songs. Why they were posted here, to me, remains a mystery.....

......but as the sound-check man in Woodstock repeatedly said, "Watch it man. There's some bad acid going around....."

......perhaps our Moderator needs to issue the same warning.......

  • Actually, Steven Stills does a great rendition of Crossroads too. Thus, both songs have ties to CSN(Y), and since the band put out an album called After the Storm, and this thread is titled The storm has arrived, perhaps those more versed than I in Murcerese can decipher and make the connection. I was never any good at that six degrees of Kevin Bacon thing.

I was riding on the Mayflower
I thought I spotted some land
    I called to Captain Ahab
    I'll have you understand
He went runnin to the deck
    Said boys forget the wales
    We're goin' over yonder
Cut the engines, chain the sails
Tow on the bowline, I sang that melody
As all tough sailors do when they're far away at sea....

Or, something like that....my contribution to irrelevance.

Also, I am only recently aware of the "Kevin Bacon" thing. But I just saw a movie with him and Matt Dillon, and was aghast that he had obviously "worked up" his member in a scene coming out of the shower. I didn't need to see this thing that looked like one of those sticks you see in old movies by folks who are searching for water. Kevin - please keep the pork in it's original form and shape - you are not fooling anyone with that enhanced bacon.

As for the rest.....whatever. Enjoy your hobby. Regards.

    Willie, Mickey and The Duke........
