Scanning instead of a loupe?

I was curious if anyone used a scanner to look over their cards prior to sending them in to be slabbed?

I've been advised to get a 10x loupe, but I was playing around with the scanner on my combo printer/scanner last night, and was amazed at the quality, even at just 600dpi.

Being able to make the card fill up my 19" monitor and really being able to look at the card with stunning detail, well, I was thoroughly enlightened. The loupe idea I know is done by a lot of people, but I am wondering if scanning in cards is a process many go through?

I don't use a loupe.. I scan cards in at 1000dpi and look them over in Photoshop. Picks up everything.

  • I use a scanner. I can't tell you my results or accuracy yet because I haven't submitted yet, but I think I've been able to analyze corners pretty well. Additionally counting pixels seems pretty effective in measuring centering.

The only drawback is that it can take a very long time to scan and organize everything. I would imagine using a loupe allows you to look at many more cards in a shorter amount of time.

I use a scanner on a rare occasion if something is marginal if not the 10 x or 30 x loupes do a great job. And a tip for novice or newbies the most over looked defects surface wrinkles and corners that are lifted. The card is square and perfect but from a side view it may have a lift or paper seperation.

  • I like using a scanner also, curious, where can you get a loupe at and how much does a 10x or 30x run in price?

    10x Loupe - Ritz Camera

$8 at ritz camera...if you have a camera shop in town, I am sure you can pick it up there.

The scanner is a great way to view a card if you only need to look at a few. But, if one is going to submit 50-100 cards, that would be very time consuming and I find an Ott light along with a 10X quality loop is an efficient way to see the cards.

I would get a loupe with its own light source.
