Spain & Portugal

I have been toying with the idea of putting together a collection of Portuguese and/or Spanish crowns. Any thoughts on what sort of premium I can expect?

Portuguese coins have been 'hot' recently. Many price increases. What grade are you looking at?

Unless I need a coin for a "type," I stick with XF or higher. So what do you opine? The article in February's World Coin News caught my interest, regarding Escudos. And I realized that the Spanish was not too shabby either. I just need "projects" to keep me going, but I do not want to pay too much of a premium, just because something is "hot."

960 reis crowns from Portuguese Brazil are interesting, because they are struck over Spanish colonial 8 reales coins, and have lots of varieties. They're also fairly cheap in XF, and undervalued. image

Yes, I have noticed Brazilian crowns. They are interesting, except for those minted between 1868 and 1889. Yeah, that could be interesting. I will give it some thought. Such a project would neatly complement my collection of Latin American crowns.

An 1814 Portuguese 400 Reis coin can be had for about $200 in Ch. BU. Although not exactly crown size, it is larger than a US half dollar.
