1881-CC Toned PCGS MS-63 Morgan Dollar -- New Daylight vs. Artificial Light Comparison Photos

StuartStuart Posts: 9,761 ✭✭✭✭✭
I swapped a couple of coins for this really sweet looking dark blue and red-brown toned 1881-CC Morgan Dollar with a sunset red-orange reverse. The obverse is darker and more vidid colored than the photo, and the reverse is imaged accurately.

It was very difficult to get a photo capturing anything close to the real obverse colors. I may have to try those new Sylvania Halogen floodlights that have recently been discussed on the forum.

What do think of my new toner?? image

I like the reverse, but the obverse is hard to tell. Is that a print between the E and Liberty's nose?

Brian, Eric and Techeff: Thanks for your posted comments about my new toned 1881-CC.

Eric: Yes, that is a fingerprint in the area that you mentioned, but this print is much less obvious on the coin in hand than in the photo. For some reason the photo exaggerates the print.

What's interesting about this coin (to me) is that it appears to have blue toning on the obverse, over the original reddish-orange toning exhibited on the reverse. In fact, it appears that the finger print extends through the blue layer to the red-orange toning layer, but does not expose the silver metal surface.

The obverse color is a really lively and beautiful metallic inky blue color interspersed with the reddish-orange coloration. The obverse colors of this coin are absolutely striking, and the coin absolutely has to be seen in person to appreciate the full chromatic effect.

It's one of those coins whose image haunts you until you buy it... image

Stuart, I think the Sylvania lights will make a big difference. I guess you are limited by size because you are attaching the images here. How about emailing me the images sized at 600x600 per side and I'll post them here.

Herb: Thanks for your post and positive comments on my new toned 1881-CC Morgan Dollar.

Actually, the obverse blue and red-orange colors are much more vibrant than the red-orange reverse. I have a revised photo that will soon be posted as a comparison.

Stuart, I'm putting together some auctions right now. As soon as I'm done I'll put them up here.
  • Stuart, that's a purdy coin...However, is that a reed mark on the cheek? It appears that there is something on the there, while on the other images it is not noticeable. Is it just me?
  • StuartStuart Posts: 9,761 ✭✭✭✭✭
ultradmpldollars: There are some light contact marks on the cheek of this coin (it's an MS-63 so that's to be expected), however the cheek is so frosty compared to the silky satiny fields, that these contact marks are not obvious with the coin in hand.

The best way that I can describe the colrs and texture would be to say that it looks like beautiful velvet. Eric will post a much more color-accurate high-resolution photo of this coin later this evening, and perhaps you will better see what I mean.

This coin haunted me during this weekend's show so much that I had to get it before the dealer packed up to return to Califronia. I felt very fortunate that he worked with me on a 2 coin trade for it.
