Logistics of displaying an expensive set at a coin show

I just received the PCGS email notifying me that the three finest sets of Barber Halves will be displayed in Long Beach. I think that these exhibits are great: great for the owners of these fine sets, great for collectors, great for the hobby, great for the business. Someday, when I have a complete set of something, I would love to exhibit it somewhere so that others can see it. Unfortunately, I do not understand the logistics of shipping, insuring, and protecting the coins. How do you get them to the show? Who watches them when you are not present? Must one purchase special insurance for such a display? How do you get them back home? Etc...

    Ryk,

I have heard of folks shipping expensive sets for presidential review via armored car.

I remember at the FUN show last year looking at the Mercury collection in what appeared to be just wooden display cases that were used as a Barrier/counter for the PCGS folks working the grading "room", No armed guards or anything near that. I am sure PCGS is carrying the Insurance while they are in possession of the coins. Shipping and such can be done via registered mail. Then again, it just may be that PCGS knows where the best collections are located and may simply have them hand delivered by the owners while in a given City where the show is held.

Robert, for especially high value items, the two options that quickly come to mind are Brinks and carrying them yourself, the latter applying only IF you have private insurance.

If you do have insurance, it typically covers you if you lock your coins in a display case at a coin show (some of which have much better security than others) and leave your table unattended.

Now, whether you'd feel comfortable leaving those babies unattended is another matter altogether.image
