Weird cards

What are some other strange cards like this 1967 Topps card of Babe Parilli ?
I mean, did the guy picking out which photograph to put on the card look through a half dozen pics and then decide

"Hmmm ... this one with his eyes closed looks pretty good, I'll use it" ?

  • When the cost of producing cards, for example with Topps, became more than what they got for the penny a pack, Topps resorted to buying photos from any source to fill the players needed to produce the set. All too often, for example, the 1972 horrible Clemente card — looking into the ground — became the norm. Long gone were the days of the 1955 and 1956 masterpieces, and then the professional photography of the 1957 set went by the wayside.

"Get me a Babe Parilli photo, any photo!" the editor would scream.

He looks like he's trying to read the ball's mind. No wonder the Pats were in the cellar for so long in the early years.

    Hi Wolf
I have always liked the 1960 Topps Johnny Unitas; can't find mine so I took this one off ebay - wish it were clearer - the pic is funny!

Mike - That Johnny U card has always been one of my favorites.
He looks like the proverbial deer caught in the headlights.

I very respectfully disagree. I find the Clemente photo to be one of the best I can think of. He isn't "looking into the ground" in my mind. Instead, he gazing at a ball he's flipping in the air, thinking about where's he's been and where he's going. Of course, it is his tragic death months later that really makes this photo special, but I truly believe it is one of the finest photos in all of Topps' history.

(The photo I've included is not mine, but here's a link to the auction...so the seller gets a little free pub.

I absolutely agree that the Clemente card is one of the finest cards around. Whether it was intentional or not, the Clemente pick shows a player in apparent deep contemplation with the ball. I think that the pic is a piece of art - along with the leaping PeeWee Reese from what, 53?
  • IMO easily the strangest is topps putting ken hubbs picture on dick ellsworth's 1966 topps card #447
  • Don't get me wrong guys . . . I make the statement of my disappointment with the '72 Clemente card for the same reasons you praise it. I grew up in the late 50s and early 60s worshipping Clemente. I have a complete run of his cards, and the Clemente cards comprise half of my collection. At one point, I actually thought I could corner the market on PSA 8 1960 Topps . . . bought everyone in sight. I was devastated on that New Year's Day when it was reported his plane went down. So, I guess I make my statement based on the comparison to his earlier cards, '55, '56, '63. One of the top five players to ever play in my mind!
