Now that's a camera

So, I'm wandering about BH Photo looking for more lights... and I see my dream camera. If I could only win the lottery...

While we can debate about the lower end DSLRs vs. the higher end prosumer cameras, this thing would really be overkill for coin photography, especially when taking images to post on the net. At 4992 x 3328 resolution, you would have to shrink the image considerably. The only advantage to this type of resolution would be if you were going to have hard copy prints made.

If you must have a DSLR for coins, I would go with either the Nikon D70 or the Canon Digital Rebel.

By the way, the review was just posted for this camera yesterday:

Different camera Rick. The one on the B&H site has twice the resolution.

  • Crazy thing is that you'll probably be able to buy that camera in a year or two for a fraction of the price.

As Barry pointed out, that's the wrong camera.

Be very, very careful about buying cameras from the sellers offering the lowest prices on these price search engines. Most of the time, the lower priced sellers are selling refurbished or grey market cameras and are very good at hiding that fact. Another angle for some of the more shady dealers is to offer a factory new box camera, and then call you to "confirm" your order. What they really do is try to upsell you in way over priced accessories. If you resist the high pressure sales of the accessories, and just want the camera, it magically becomes out of stock and permanently backordered, unless you agree to $500 of accessories that are only worth $100.

True, 6 megapixel digicams were selling for 5K+ not very long ago and advertised as "pro" models. At this rate they'll be giving away 3.6 mp cameras (like mine) in cereal boxes soon.
