1972 T1 Ike in MS66 population has tripled!

Well, the POP went from 1 to 3. Not really a huge increase when you look at it as 2 coins but from 1 to 3 is a pretty big jump in a very short period of time.

Where are they?

Who graded them?

I am buying a new house!

Please do not offer one to me.

My wife will scalp me!

I LIKE IKE!

LOL. Well that is a good reason to stay away. Do you like all dollars equally?

I started with the SBA's but there is no where to go with those so now I have moved to Ike's and Sac's.

I also really enjoy my mostly AU set of Buffalo's. Trying to collect these in TOP POP is not something my budget will allow.

Packing is done 2 hours to go!

    DRG,
I can understand your excitement. I currently attend every show possible, and have noticed that every Ike collector there is looking for high grade coins, type # 2, error Ikes, color coins, and ect.
It's no wonder that pops have been increasing ! The 1971-P in ms 66 has gone from 26 to 30 in a few months. The 1976-S in ms 68 has gone through the roof !!
However, the really difficult coins will not skyrocket like the 1976-S in Ms68. THE 1971-P, 1972-P, 1973-P, and 1976-P- Type # 1 will still be hard to find in high grades.

Don't bet the farm on it. That's what was said of the 76-S not long ago.

The price of the 76-S is still pretty high!

They seem to be selling in the 400-500 range. Prior to the hoard, they were selling in the 600-700 range. Not a big drop.

It appears that the "sacred" Clad MS Ikes in the series may now be possibly undergoing price corrections similar to what we have seen on the 40% Silvers. For example, the last sale on the 1972(p) Ike Ty 3 in PCGS-MS65 on ebay was just $305 - wasn't this a $400+-$500 coin a few months ago? There are also now around -16- 1972(p) Ikes in PCGS-MS66 in all varieities (weren't there around 1/2 that many a short time ago?)

Don't get me wrong - I personally love the new prices of some of these gem Clad MS Ikes and I am buying coins at these levels. Nothing has changed as far as my view on just how tough these coins are in high grade. The only thing I see is that demand has basically not kept up with supply for many MS Clad Ikes, especially the "one grade under top pop" coins. Just my 2 cents.

    Mitch,

As you well know, eye appeal will play a big role in the pricing of upper end high price Ikes. A 72-P sold Monday for around $400. My guess is low priced coins are low end coins. Maybe a good deal sneaks through occaisionally. Happens in every series.

As for MS66 Pop's on the 72-P they were 9 about 3 years ago in 66 before the varieties were recognized. As I can best recall, the 3 Type II in 66 have been there for a year or so, the Type III were 7, now ten and the Type I jumped from 1 to 3.

I think if anything, prices may wane a bit, but demand still out weighs supply on the tough dates.

As I said, I'll buy a Type I in 66. I'll also support the balance of the dates in top grade.

I've tried to buy one of the other type II's in 66 for over $13000, yes $13000 and I can't get one.

    James: Good points.

I bought the coin on Monday for around $350 as I recall and would have bought the coin today at auction for nearly the same amount if I had been around. As I mentioned, while we are debating whether supply is outstriping demand (which it appears to me may be happening (perhaps even in the short run), I am comfortable buying more coins at the lowering levels and personaly "averaging down". I know you are comfortable buying stock as well.

I Don't think prices are dropping for coins with eye appeal. I Personally keep only the finest Ikes, regardless of the grade.
Also, most Ike collectors will pay a premium price for PQ coins.
they must have eye appeal, eye appeal, eye appeal !!!
What that means to most of us is :
No haze, fingerprints, carbon spots, and most importantly, BOLD, SHARP STRIKES !!
I will not pay a premium for a coin with a weak strike, even if it's in a higher graded holder !!

    Coindog,

You'll do well! Those coins will always be in demand. Prices may drop a little, but not hugely for top end specimens.

    James,
I am in agreement with you about PQ Ikes. I collect keys, and semi-key coins of the other series. However, I collect complete sets of Ikes.
I like them the best.Very few series offer the challenge of Ike dollars.

Let the seller know I'm a buyer. With 4, the price goes down a bit!
