HUGE Props to BBCExchange

Allow me to add my name to the list of BBCExchange fans.

I bought an unopened box of 1978 Topps baseball wax last week, and it came in the mail today. My wife and I opened all the packs after dinner today - not a corner ding in the box. The box was in absolutely awesome condition (my wife pulled the Molitor rookie out of the first pack in the box), lots of stars (but no Murray image ), and not a question in my mind that this box was authentic, unopened, right from a vending case.

I'm buying another box tomorrow.

What a great dealer.

Steve is a great guy to deal with, and very personable. I"ve had nothing but great dealings with him both thru the mail and in person.

Great! because I just purchased the same image

I inquired to Steve about these and he told me I won't be disappointed. How was the centering on the cards Novocent?

    Steve rocks!
  • Best unopened item I've ever bought. Not one corner ding in the box.

Centering can't be helped - that's a printing/cutting issue. But I've bought lots of vending boxes over the past few months, and found lots of corner dings. Not a bad corner in this entire box. It clearly came from a case that has been sealed for a long, long time.

I'd much rather open a box and find an off-center card with four sharp corners than open a box and find a perfectly centered card with a corner ding. Like I said, I'm buying another box tomorrow.

Certainly not criticizing any of you...we all know the thrill of the vintage unopened stuff, especially boxes like these. It's fun. But........I'm curious to know what you're looking for that makes it worth the price since you're opting to open them? Shop around and you can buy a VERY sweet set of '78s for $200-250. And aren't there only about 4 cards that if totalled up might make it worth your while should they all somehow come out of those packs centered well enough to grade 9? 10s are awfully, awfully tough in any issue. 8's in '78 aren't worth the trouble. Seems like a major gamble. Or am I missing something?

Maybe the thrill of the hunt? Memories of ripping those 78s? Who knows what drives us all image
  • Good question.

I have an almost-complete 78 set that I collected as a kid, and it's worth more to me than any box I could buy from anyone.

But I decided a few weeks ago that I was going to shoot for a complete set from every year the Yanks won the World Series. I was already almost done with 53 Topps, 38 Goudey, and 61 Topps, and decided that I needed to take a break from buying all that high-priced vintage, to save my wallet a bit.

At the same time, if I'm going to start collecting anything post 1961, I feel the cards should be sharp and new. I bought some 1977 vending boxes on Ebay, enjoyed pulling the cards, and sent a bunch off for grading. A few came back as 9s. But I was also disappointed at the amount of corner dings in the boxes. Two unopened vending boxes and one opened one, and I still can't put together a ding-free 77 set.

That's a huge drag to me. So I'd heard a lot of great things about BBCExchange, and decided to try out a wax box instead of a vending box. I got exactly what I wanted - an hour or so of entertainment, a bunch of ding-free packs, and no worries about the packs having been searched.

So yeah, I overpaid for the box - probably three times what the whole set is really worth, and I opened the box. But my goal is a complete set with 2,904 sharp corners. How much would I have to pay in $200 boxes to get that? Because I didn't get it with three cheap '77 vending boxes...

Al - I bought 2 of those boxes back in December, and I mostly agree with you. However, I sent in a bunch of the cards I pulled for grading, and while I did get a lot of 9's, and 4 10's - I also got a lot of 5's. Because of the age of the cards, the gum "melted" through the back card, and the card or two next to that, and caused very minor surface wrinkles on a lot of the cards I thought were mint. And, this was after I checked them over with a 10X loupe - just couldn't see the wrinkles. So, I totally agree - BBCExchange is awesome, and I loved breaking these boxes, overall the number of quality cards wasn't what I first thought. Better than vending, though.

These boxes vending? or wax? Al you keep alluding to both.

Great to hear that you did well.

    BBEX is super.
    Good for you.
  • Steve, I'm comparing the 78 wax box I bought from BBCExchange to some 77 vending boxes I've bought elsewhere.

However, I was doing it after midnight with three martinis in me, so it's possible I may have been confusing. image

I also just purchased a box of 85 topps football from bbexchange. I pulled three elways and two Montanas only big card i didnt get was marino. Some of the cards have gum and wax stains which is expected. But I believe I may have a few 10's and a whole lot of 9's which isnt bad for a 90.00$ box.

    Topps Heritage

    Now collecting:
    Topps Heritage

    1957 Topps BB Ex+-NM
    All Yaz Items 7+
    Various Red Sox
    Did I leave anything out?
  • I've always enjoyed the packs I've gotten from the BBCexchange. Last week I pulled a Pippen, Stockton and Rodman rookie as well as some stars from 88/89 Fleer packs.

70's and 80's wax has become my weekly fix as of late image

The breakup value is actually really good for alot of vintage packs.

Take for example the 88/89 set:

On average, it takes 11 packs to make a set. The cheapest box that you can find will run about $450. That means you'll be into a NM-MT set for about $137.50. The NM-MT SMR value of the regular set and the stickers is about equal to that.

Plus you've got the upside of 9's and 10's. And of course the fun factor.

I've done 5 figures with Steve and it was all great.

Met him in Chicago and Cleveland.I'm surprised he knew it was me when I saw him at the National.

He let me hold Roger's Henderson RC that was on his table. And he wouldn't let me pay 39 cents for those 60s packs like the price said. image

At the end of ANY day, it's nice to know there are people like him in this hobby well worth running into. He's all first class as a dealer and most importantly as a person.

Has anyone ever crack a 1978 rack case? I was wondering about the distribution. How many stars can on avg are in a rack case?
  • softparadesoftparade Posts: 9,276 ✭✭✭✭✭
I think it is safe to say that a even a 3 box rack case of 78 Topps would be riddled with stars. There is more than 20 HOF'ers in the set. In addition there are second year Andre Dawson Dale Murphy Bruce Sutter and so on. In just one rack pack the other day I pulled #20 Pete Rose, # 72 Andre Dawson, # 704 Whitaker Rookie, and #708 Dale Murphy. WHy are you interested in taking the plunge on one?

I just opened the 1982 Topps football cello box that I ordered from BB Card Exchange. It was delivered the day after I bought it...wow. I pulled on LT, two Lott's, 2 Montana's and 2 Munoz. Only two were gradeable however - centering always kills me on the 82's!!

  • Jay,

Yes Ive cracked a 3 box before results were pretty good. No molitors or murray in 9. Many of the cards were riddled with surface wrinkles which I have found consistant with 77's and 78's. Now as for recouping your cash nowaday with the prices unless you hit the run wtih molitor and murray its going to be rough unless you can find one for 2250 or so. I paid 1750 three years ago when the bidding was hot. Did really well and got to build 70% of the set. The knowledge was great plus I still have an awesome razor raw set.

1978 Topps is my favorite set. It is the year I started collecting cards. I think, price wise, you have to somewhat throw that out the window and focus on the enjoyment of just opening the cards. If you love the set, and have the extra cash to spend, I'd say do it! It has always been more fun for me to build a set this way rather than buying a set and upgrading later on. A lot more expensive, but a lot more enjoyable. I would be interested in reading about anyone's busts (not the chest type, the card type!).

jay i think the box was around 1650. i was very happy with the condition of the cards. most were near mint. nicest bunch of raw commons i've ever seen although there were many off centered. i have about 200 nm raw if anyone is interested. i didnt think they were gradable but they are very nice. the bottom card was always stained as expected. 1 brett-perfect except oc. no younts, no lynn's or rice's. couple munson's , 1 schmidt, lots of mvp cards. i sent in about 100 commons for grading and most came back 8's with some 9's. i really thought i had a couple 10's . 1 munson rec'd a 9. i had a blast opening up the box.

  • Steve Hart is THE KING! Hands down the best dealer I've met in the hobby and for that matter one of the best people. His reputation is no accident. He works really hard at being the best. He's always asking questions, gathering opinions of his clients and acting on them. Also, unlike other large dealers, when he asks what you collect--he'll actually try to find the items. THE KING! No, I'm not on the BBCEx payroll. If he was a turd I'd say so. I am compiling a massive list of dealers/eBayers and forum folks that I will list later this year. The list will be divided into the Dogs and the Droppings. It's time there was an award show or dinner...seems everyone in every field has an award show...I want one, dammit! Congrats on the box and remember when paying a bit more from Steve...you get what you pay for.

like it was said before you will pay more but it's worth it. also ripping 25-35 year old wax is a thrill thats well worth the cash. for what she paid, it wasn't a sound investment by any stretch of the imagination but let me tell you the fun factor was well worth it. also, i did pull a clemente that graded out as a 9 but would not look out of place in 10 holder.

i would never by unopened from anyone but steve or mark murphy.
