Guess the denomination, if you dare. Why yes, it was a bob.

Whilst you're at it, give a go at the decade this coin was produced. What are the telltale clues? I'll post the reverse tomorrow night.

Have fun. image

Yes indeed, Mr. Wybrit, it really is a shilling.....but, you knew that. image

If you encounter a one-sided coin on eBay, look at the hanging curl extending from the bun. It's much longer and more pronounced on the shilling compared to a sixpence.
Also, the forward ribbon in the Queen's hair points to between the 'A' & 'T' of GRATIA on the shilling, and the same ribbon points to the 'I' of GRATIA on the 6d.
And yes, it is most certainly higher relief that the 3/4/6d. And, did I say, the date is 1840.

Below the shilling rev. is a tanner, albeit smaller.

Shilling. It can't be a 3d, 4d or 6d because the portraits are less detailed. It is not a florin, of course and it is not a halfcrown because the dates for the YHs were on the obverse.

Very pretty, I am going to guess, this is just a WAG without looking at any books, that it is a Shilling?

The date is somewhere in the timeframe of 1839 to 1867. I'm guessing the 1850s.

Wybrit, maybe it's a pattern florin. image

Wybrit, maybe it's a pattern florin.

The pattern florins of 1848 did not use that obverse and lettering.

I'll guess sixpence from late 1860's or the 1870's.

    Bob, TTT!

I knew it was a Bob on inspection. Guessing the decade was more of a challenge since the obverse changed in 1839 and made only a subtle change in 1858 (per Davies).

The shilling's young head is among the finest of Victoria's young head portraits.
