New Hockey Guy

Hey everyone, just got on the boards after reading them for about a week. Had some problems with my password. Just wanted to say hi and let you know I'm working on 5 sets in the registry. Pretty much finished my raw sets from '60 up and finally took the psa plunge. Give me a shout if you have something I need. Thanks for looking. Bob C.

welcome, new hockey guy! sadly, this board is just a shadow of its former self, but i think a few hockey people still post here occasionally. besides, i tend to think that most things run in cycles, so maybe the board will again liven up with good discussion one of these days.

Welcome, Bob.. I collect hockey as well, and recently took the plunge into PSA graded cards as well. Looking to put together an '83-'84 OPC set for the Oilers, since they should be reasonably cheap in 8 or higher.

The site has got great people who are out there, even if they're not posting as much right now. Ask and you'll get some great answers.

    Cheers,

    Mike

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. Hockey is definitely my passion and your right, us hockey collectors are few. I was hooked when I met my hero when I was 7 years old. Yep the greatest hockey player ever....Bobby Orr...but that's a whole other thread. I also collect Boston Olympics memorabilia. They were the Bruins minor league affiliate in the 40's & 50's. My dad was a stick boy for them in the mid 40's so I started buying programs to hopefully find my dad in an odd picture...no luck but I have a pretty good Pics collection now that includes a game jersey (see pic below), a players team jacket, a team signed puck, 2 team signed photos and tons of photos and programs. If any of you run across any Pics items please keep me in mind. Thanks again for the welcome. Bob

    Welcome Bob

Great to have some new hockey blood on the forums. I am on the 62 Parkhurst registry as well.
Please take the time to tell of when you met Bobby Orr.
By far the most impressive sports figure I have met in person was Johnny Bower, He was signing at a local drugstore about 5 years ago. He was signing for free, however he was accepting donations for a local charity. He was a great goaltender and is an even greater human being. He lives in my hometown of Mississauga Ontario.

Hey guys, again thanks for the warm welcome and great info.

Rob...great 62 Parkie set! Hopefully my set will be that good one day. The Bobby Orr story is coming in another thread. Johnny Bower was always one of my favorites along with Bruce Gamble and the great Mr. Plante. No surprise he's a great guy as most hockey players I've met from that era are. Now the current players, thats another story!

Tom... i'll email you end of the week I got a bunch of bids in on the bay and I wanna see how it plays out. Thanks!

Dan...Thanks for the info on the 69 OPC's. Did you notice the Orr 9 on the bay? The seller states"not cut from a sheet like most of the 1960's OPC's are now" (not verbatum but close). Wouldn't PSA mark these so called cut from a sheet "Hand Cut" as they are available in a regular issue also? I thought I read that on their site. Any info on these sheet cuts would be appreciated. I don't know about you but I would prefer my sets without them.

Thanks guys, make sure you read my Orr story. Later, Bob

Welcome from another hockey guy. I think it's time we start letting the hockey presence be felt on these boards even if it's not being played on the ice!

The only problem I'm going to have with you is your opinion of the greatest hockey player ever. Orr was good, OK he was great butttttttttttttt Mr. Hockey is still the greatest ever. Gordie played most of his career when there was only 6 teams. It would be like playing against an all star team every game today. He also was a true gentleman (although I'm sure some of his opponents might disagree with that statement). I was priviledged to meet him on several occasions including once skating with him at an ice rink he owned just outside of Detroit. Another time, i was with my dad and we stopped to get gas and the guy from the car on the otherside of the pumps came over and started to clean our windows, it was Gordie. I've read where he liked to do that to surprise people.

I'm sure he argued with his agent (his wife) but he never went out on strike.

I disagree...I think it was Stan Fischler who pointed out... (possibly someone else).... If you had to make up a hockey team and could only choose 1 guy, would you rather have 6 Gretzky's, 6 Howe's or 6 Orr's???? Hands down it's 6 Orrs. ONLY defenceman to EVER lead the NHL in scoring. Think about that for a second. Mr. Hockey and Mr. Gretzky I agree are undoubtably hockey icons forever to be etched in the ranks of greatness but they will always come behind Mr. Orr. One can only wonder what he would have accomplished if he didn't come out of juniors with 2 bad knees. If only he could have played more than 10 years in the league. There would be no discussions now about #1. JMO Bob

Onlypsahockey - Stan Fischler never stated such a thing (that would be too intelligent a statement for him). In fact, his selecting Orr the 13th best player of all-time cost Orr the #1 spot on the Hockey News Top 50 registry.

Have the Jacks even been around long enough for their game to be considered "classics"??image

I've been getting my fix listening to OHL and WHL junior games on the internet. Junior hockey is, in my opinion, a great refuge to the clutching and grabbing tie-them-up-in-the-neutral-zone NHL game.

I just listen to them online. A few teams have setups so you can even WATCH the game online. In Canada, I believe there's a game of the week on Rogers Cable (or whatever it is now). However, I have a friend here in the Kansas wheatfields who has been able to get Ontario League games on Sundays with Direct TV satellite (on Rogers). So to answer your question, yes, you'd need satellite in most cases to pick up junior games.
