At what grade do you think PCGS will holder this this Jefferson??

keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭
It's a 1945-P DDR Jefferson Nickel, strong and unbroken luster, bright silver-nickel in color and non-Full Step. I figure MS64 lock with a strong chance for MS65 and wondered how the board felt. BTW, if someone can host the larger pictures I have I'll e-mail them.

Thanks.

Seems a little weak on the reverse but just a little. The scan is a little dark to me so I can't be certain but I can see it in a 65 holder. Nice coin. I need one of those.

I saw that Al! I'm just amazed that it's similar to my Doubled Monticello!

oh, OK. when i first saw these kind of DDR's i was skeptical, thought they were strike doubles. this is the second one i've cherrypicked.

Weak reverse strike and spot right of Monticello makes this a tough 64/65 call ... the way PCGS is grading right now makes it even more difficult. Nice pick ... 64.

Al, yours looks like it could go 65 to me. It's a nice score in any grade!

This is FS-030, a very nice doubled die similar in appearance to the 1939
FS-022 "Doubled Monticello" variety. As the photo shows, the doubling
is most prominent in the right side of "MONTICELLO" and "FIVE CENTS".

Someone sent me one of that example awhile back. It's nowhere near as nice as that, but the doubling is evident. I'll give a guess of 64, based on the reverse.

Based on the ones that I've made of this variety I would call this a nice 65. The reverse on these is usually of VERY poor quality.

Any recommended resources for identifying a "FS-030/FS-022" etc...? I have The Jefferson Nickel Analyst" but that's my only Jeff reference.

Just to clarify...I call this a 66, but the question asked is what would PCGS grade it. In 66 it would be a pop5/0 coin...

I do wonder about that little spot to the right of Monticello,
though...from the photo, it looks like a little halo of toning
surrounding a small surface contaminant (carbon spot).

If so, it might be worth some conservation.

I've seen coins worse than that in PCGS 66 holders. It's a 66 in my opinion. I'm not sure what PCGS's opinion will be though.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

that spot is quite exaggerated in the large photo, in-hand with the naked eye it's almost a non issue. until it was pointed out by RGL i hadn't even given it notice. i picked the coin up in a club auction and know the old'ster who consigned it, so it's almost certainly un-monkeyed with and an original coin put back many years ago.

Since my fresh-in-hand PCGS guide to coin grading book says that a coin will grade no higher than the obverse, regardless of the reverse condition, and the obverse of Al's coin looks a bit cleaner than the 66 posted, I'd have to opine that it is a lock at 65 and pretty much even money at 66. As previously stated, they are getting a bit judicious at PCGS!
