GOETZ: K 217 Election for German National Assembly

K-217 ELECTION FOR THE GERMAN NATIONAL ASSEMBLY (Wahl zur deutschen National-Versammlung), 1919, Cast AE, 58.5mm, wt. 74.5g. UNC

Obverse shows woman placing her ballot in the voting urn while a depressed looking man walks away. This is symbolic of the fact that in this election German women were exercising their voting rights for the first time. Obverse inscription reads “National Assembly” and in the background the Social Democrats carry posters reading “Wahltag – Zahltag”/ “Election day – Payday”.

Reverse shows a heavy workman’s arm reaches out to crush the Kaiser’s crown, as another pillar inscribed “18 Januar 1871” –, symbolic of the foundation of the German Empire, collapse. Another hand coming from behind the pillar representing the Democracy tries to catch the broken sceptre of the overthrown monarchy. Rim inscription “Jan. 19, 1919”

Another super medal, the reverse is a true work of art.

    Great piece, as usual.
