LINCOLN CENT QUESTION!

mozeppamozeppa Posts: 4,431 ✭✭✭
1956 lincoln cent question... and 1957 cent
about the "twisted re-punched 5 variety"..........(so called)
did it occur in both the philidephia and denver strikings?
i have one anacs graded.......it is a 1956-D.
i looked it up in my wexler book and they show most of the 9 & 5 of 1956...but their picture appears to be a 56 philly.
(they cropped up the pix just enough to leave doubt....and never referenced which it was in their listing.)

then in 57 there was reference to a re-punched or tilted "7" in the date.....did this also occur in philly AND denver?
or just one mint?

thanks...... mike

    no one?
  • Never heard of such an animal. This would be news to me if legit. So far as I know, date punches on cents ended with the Indian head cent (1909). image
  • Here's what David Lange has to say about the 1956D cent ("Complete Guide To Lincoln Cents"):

"One variety has what appears to be the horizontal and vertical segments of an additional numeral 5 tilted at a 30 degree clockwise angle to the date. Since dates are engraved rather than punched, the cause of this condition is uncertain."

He does not mention anything like this for the 1957 cents, and on the 1956, it's Denver only. image

I'm leaning toward die damage that happens to be well placed. I currently have the die acknowledged as a doubled die because that's the only thing it can be if the indicated problem was caused by a 5 digit in the hub (because as stated before, NONE of the Lincoln cent dies were individually punched with date digits).

That I know of, the anomaly mentioned is only on 1956D cents. Regarding the 1957 cent, I don't know about it at all.

Leading into the 1958 and 1958D cents that supposedly (according to Breen) had remnants of a 7 underneath the 8. This "variety" has been debunked by all modern experts in the field as gouges on the master die. In other words, the Breen listed 1958/7 cents simply don't exist, and even if they did, they would be far too common to have any premium value.

    Hope this helps.
