What was your best coin shop experience?

Did anyone ever go to a coin shop that they felt they were not being rushed to buy something with out really examining a coin before purchasing it? Most dealers I've been to have coins in the back room. You tell them what you interested in looking at and they only bring out and show you 1-3 coins at once. I like the coin shops that have a display case full of coins that you can glance at until you see something that catches your collectors eye. Is there any coin shops that you have been to that you felt were very good to you and you always go back to because of good experiences?

Also, does anyone know any good coin shops in N.Y. that are located in Queens or long Island.

  • My best experiences have been in Canada, one in Vancouver at the Bay ( not ebay! ) with Brian Grant Duff's shop and the other was in Nanaimo Coin Shop.
Both allowed time and were friendly with advise and sales.

I haven't had an incredible coin shop experience, but I always enjoy going to Santa Barbara Coin & Stamp. It's well organized, has a decent amount of inventory, and a comfortable atmosphere.
  • None... haven't had any shop experiences that rate better than Neutral....

I used to go to Coins of the Realm in the Rockville/Potomac MD area as a kid. I remember they used to give Kennedy halves and Ike dollars as change.
Give Blood (Red Bags) & Platelets (Yellow Bags)!
  • I will let you know next week. Going to my 1st coin shop ever. Everything to date has been done on the internet. That's if the snow will stop. Will be going to Colorado Springs. They should have one there.image

There are two good coin shops in Colorado Springs.

The best is Hallenbeck's on Nevada (near Colorado College). I worked there when I lived in Colorado Springs for about a year and a half. A great shop -- friendly and knowledgeable folks, all sorts of stuff in stock, comfortable atmostphere.

Art Jorgenson's shop is called Colorado Precious Metals, I believe, and is near the Olympic Training center. Friendly folks there too. I think a new one has opened in town since I lived there too.

Hallenbeck's should be your first stop -- no matter what you collect, you'll probably find something to buy. How many coin shops have a Yap stone on display?
  • I had a good experience at a coin shop in Toronto, Canada a year and a half ago. After picking up a few items, I noticed a case of Canadian 1967 Silver Dollars. The owner who was about in his late 70`s asked if I was ready to checkout. I told him that they just caught my eyes and wouldn`t mind buying one. He picked one out right away and said " This is my favorite! " I looked at it for a few seconds and said, " Sure, I`ll take it! " The scan below is what I got. image I don`t regret getting it.

  • Thanks I will go to them. appreciate it as I was just going to do it with no idea of where to go. Thx again
  • My best experience has always been with Independence Coin & Stamp in Charlotte, NC. They do hand out half dollars and two dollar bills for change and sometimes the occasional worn out buffalo or dateless coin. Very pleasent people to deal with and they will go out of their way to take care of you. Never an attitude just happy freindly guys to see and do business with. I see the same customers in there weekly and kids too. Cases and cases loaded with great coins.

My experience at JJ Teaparty in Boston has always been good -
  • My best coin shop experience was a place run by a man named Stefan Sonntag in Stuttgart, Germany. The place was loaded with lots of wonderful coins and medals. I'm a relatively young collector so sometimes I have a real problem of being taken seriously. But Sonntag was very helpful and friendly and he let me look at whole trays of raw coins and medals at a time! He let me take my time, answered any question I had, and gave me a large beautiful auction catelogue for free. In the end I got the blue silver medal you see in my sig line. It was a beautiful September day too and that day I met up with a university friend I haddn't seen in years and we ended up in the castle garden relaxing in the warm sun that afternoon.

    That was a good day.

Robinsons Coins in Marietta. They aren't fancy, and they deal mostly in circ stuff. But, the folks are nice, willing to sit and chat about coins, and from time to time, I do find a real gem in there for decent prices...........gotten some nicely toned Morgans in the past from them.

  • I used to go to a coin shop near Orlando, they have a lot of coins in their show cases that I can look at. And they talk to you other than, If you need help let's know, unless you ask them question. I don't feel presure and i don't get the dirty look if I don't buy any coin in that day.
That what a coin shop ought to be. image
