Proof Sets Question

Hi all!

Being a newbie to the lifestyle of coin collecting I am starting to find the things that I like. To me Proofs have the most eye appeal and are very good for display. I am starting to amass a both a yearly clad and a silver proof collection which leads me to my question:

Using the PCGS Price Guide as a map it looks Silver Proof Sets didn't appear until 1976 then started to become prevelent until 1992. Were Silver sets not available pre 1976?

Thanks!

Regards,

-Tom

Prior to 1965 all circulating dimes, quarters and half dollars were silver - and so were the proof sets.

In 1965 through 1967 the US Mint did not produce any proof sets and instead made "Special Mint Sets" (SMS) instead of proof sets.

The proof sets returned in 1968. In 1976 the Bicentennial proof sets were 40% silver in addtion to standard clad proof sets.

In 1992 the US Mint starting producing 90% silver versions of proof coins and continue to do so today.

  • If I'm correct which I think I am there were proof set back in the 50's I have several. I'm not sure what type of sets you are refering to. I have the flat packs. which contain the 50 cent through the penny. I know of the other type called Prestige I think but I think they had a dollar in them. Mine are 54 through 60 the 60 is small date. Wish I could of been more help. I think the earliest Proof set is a 1936

    I think a typo should read 1992
