Question for Morgan Experts....

Hi, I'm quite new to the hobby and have recently puchased an 1884 Morgan. Upon examination, I noticed that the supposed mint mark in the reverse side between the letter D and O of Dollar looks more like a full circular feature (filled circle) instead of a supposed letter mint mark. I have read topics on filled mint marks from other coins but is this also possible to Morgans ? How then would we know what place of origin would the coin come from with these filled mint marks? image

More than likely, it is an 1884-O. For that date, a filled mintmark is quite common from what I have seen.

Please post a picture or scan if you are able.

    Cheers, Richard.

image Filled mint marks can be identified with a nice loop. Get up close and personal with themimage To the naked eye, they may look like a blob, but under a little magnification, you should be able to see what it is.

    Case in point....

  • I'm not an expert by any means. However, it sounds like you're describing a 84-O vam-5R filled "O" per Van Allen & Mallis's 4th ed. catalogue.

What is money, in reality, but dirty pieces of paper and metal upon which privilege is stamped?

I'm not an expert either, but it does sound like a VAM-5. I have several 1884-O's, and I think they are all different O/O variations... don't have a filled O VAM-5 though! Can you post a picture after vacation?

Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!
