Question for Morgan Experts....
Coined
Posts: 2
Hi, I'm quite new to the hobby and have recently puchased an 1884 Morgan. Upon examination, I noticed that the supposed mint mark in the reverse side between the letter D and O of Dollar looks more like a full circular feature (filled circle) instead of a supposed letter mint mark. I have read topics on filled mint marks from other coins but is this also possible to Morgans ? How then would we know what place of origin would the coin come from with these filled mint marks?

<< <i>I'm not an expert by any means. However, it sounds like you're describing a 84-O vam-5R filled "O" per Van Allen & Mallis's 4th ed. catalogue. >>
I'm not an expert either, but it does sound like a VAM-5. I have several 1884-O's, and I think they are all different O/O variations... don't have a filled O VAM-5 though! Can you post a picture after vacation?
