I'm working On this old lady's VCR and we get into a small conversation and..Lots of images!(34) Glo

She brings out this box and says "Wanna look through these?" I open the box and my eyeballs pop from my head.
After going through them I started to get depressed but in the same token I was happy for seeing these coins. It gave me a chance to see uncleaned coins. This old lady use to be a Barmaid and she used to keep coins regularly. Unfortunatly she kept them in sandwich bags. There was a list inside the box where someone had went through them and graded them and priced them. The list was very old and yellow. I was surprised the person who did that didn't place them in a decent holder for safe keeping. I spent about 2-3 hours sorting and carding them for her no matter the condition.....It made her happy. Not all are a loss I don't think but it was damn fun and ONE hell of a thing to do on my birthday!

Now here is the Glory and the Sorrow part:

  • Wow...that's a lot of PVC.....I would have purchased some Acetone and dipped some of those for her.......it's too late to save the coins per say, but at least the coins wouldn't get worse image

A couple of those are really cool! The 83cc is cool as well as a few more. Some of those with gunk on them should be rinsed in pure acetone and maybe gone over with a rose thorn. I bet it would help them. Still, it sure sounds like fun. image

Remember that sandwich bags have no PVC
  • I wasn't sure if they contained that or not.......I have not dealt with PVC damaged coins enough to know how to care for them. Since they are not my coins I do not want to do more harm to the coins than what is there. So I left them as is. I was hoping someone could give me a bit of direction as far as caring for these coins.

Rinse them with acetone (pure acetone). No problems or harm will come to the coins. but problems may go away. And be assured that sandwich bags have no PVC.

Four out of five old ladies surveyed have a collection like this.

Ask SethChandler about his old lady story, the one with the AU 1879-O $20!

Wow, you don't see a peace dollar worn like that 1922 very often.

Pretty nice accumulation! You might want to get her some 2x2s or something similar to store them in. BTW - I see the glory, but where's the sorrow? For once, it looks like she didn't take some brillo to them before she showed you!
  • Gonfunko, The sorrow is the PVC. I 2x2 carded all of them tonight and added date mint mark on the 2x2. Some I added grade.

I put the 83-cc at VG8 (maybe G6). Curious what you put on that one?

Hey- Great story Chris. You know- I bet you made her day just spending the time with something of hers and showing her someone cares for her and her "stuff"- You are a good guy Chris. And HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHRISimageimageimage
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"
  • I graded that one at VG-8 and put that on the card.
  • Hey! its JRocco! how's it going guy!

Yeah she was quite pleased with what I did for her coins. I also gave her a nice box that held 2x2's. It was a win/ win situation.

Ah, that explains it. I wouldn't worry too much - the PVC contamination doesn't seem too severe on many of the coins. A quick bath in acetone should help the coins a lot. Not sure if you've done that yet or not, but it should fix them up nicely. image
    BTW, happy birthday!
  • Thanks gonfunko!

Naw, this is the first time I have seen PVC up close and personal not to mention at this level. I knew something should be done about it but they are not my coins. At this pooint I can pass word and give explanations of what is to come. I will let the owner decide what she wants done.
  • I think we're talking about polyethylene or polypropylene. Sandwich bags are one of those (not sure which). I've stored coins in these sorts of bags and they come out with a strange, waxy feel to them and they are obviously coated in the plastic. Overall it seems similar to PVC. I have no idea if acetone will get rid of it, though.

Just curious, how did you bring up the topic of coins with the old gal? I try to work it in all the time myself with older folks, after all, they are the ones most likely to have old coins. I just wondered if you had a good line that works that you'd be willing to share.
  • Great story and pics. Thanks for sharing. image

Is that 1916 Mercury Dime the one with the "D" on the back???

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

Little bit of charisma and got lucky. She asked what other stuff I did and that got the ball rolling.

    Barber

I missed a shot of reverses on that set of 4 barbers. The reverses just after the set of barbers dimes with the 1916 in the lower left is correct. The set of barbers dimes with the 1916 in the upper right does not have a picture of reverses. I set all of the coins out on the table face up and as I took a shot I flipped them to reverse and took another that way I could keep order on my camera. I simply missed that set. I'm going to go back over there so I'll grab a shot of those reverse and stick it in here.

She also had a full coffee can of Kennedy Halves. The 2 kennedy halves that are in the 2nd image came from there......I went through the whole can........that took a while! I had stacks of kennedys everywhere! I almost felt like Russ for a second!
  • I have a story like that but it has to develope yet. For some reason the nice middle age women that I see every day figured out that I mess around with coins. She ask me if I would look at some of hers and I said I would be glad. the trouble is the coins are in an antique Piggy Bank given to her by some relative when she was very young. All she know is the bank is full of V Nickels and Standing Liberty Quarters. Weighs about 6.5 lbs. she doen't what to break the Bank and the slot won't allow you to use the old butter knife trick. Now what? The Bank is sort of a China type Pottery material. Do you guys think if I got out the old Dremil tool and tried to like sand or grind the opening larger with some sort of emery disk will it break the bank. I would feel quilty as hell if I broke it. But I'm about to have a kitten waiting to see whats in there.

    Here's a question:

Why fix a VCR? Isn't it cheaper to throw it in the garbage and get a new one?

If he didn't try to fix it, he'd never have seen the coins.

Funny, but minus any real rare coins, the well worn Peace dollar is probably the most expensive coin in the lot. I would love to own it.

This old lady grew up in the 20's and 30's when the depression was going on.........try to get someone who went through that to throw stuff away. image

Yeah, the metal cage that you slide the tape in got bent and wouldn't allow the tape to rest properly on the pegs that turned the taped. I pulled the cage out filed off some rough edges and straightened up the cage. Then I greased some of the moving parts and checked the belts for condition.....fired it up and it worked like a charm.

Since it was a simple fix I didn't charge her any cash...Her letting me go through her coins was payment enough. She gave me ten bucks anyway....after I told no charge.
