If somebody has a worn out or damaged coin where you can't tell the mint, and theres a common or scarce date as well as a rare date,...........well it just has to be the rare one.
Right.
I sent this guy a message and told him what the characteristics of the 1869-S are, which this ex-button is, but it doesn't look like he'll do what right and note it in his auction.
The San Francisco minted 1869 Seated Quarter has a low mintmark with a flat bottomed 9.
In the late die state, which this coin is, there is also an obverse die crack. It starts on the left side of the rock base on which Liberty sits, and goes to star 1, then around the coin thru the stars.
You can see the crack on this coin from the rock base to star 1.

Ray, based on reading the auction, I think that this guy knows that it is a San Francisco mint coin. Based on the information that you gave him, he should cancel the auction and relist it as a 69-S. Thanks for posting the diagnostics for this coin. GREAT information, especially considering that there are many 1869 quarters floating around that have had the "S" removed (especially on low grade coins).
