About these two new Wisconsin varieties...

We've all read about the two new Wisconsin quarter varieties that were recently discovered in Tucson. While I'm not into varieties I do find the news of these very interesting. So much so that I ordered a set from Rick Snow's company and received them today. Having inspected these with a 10x, although you don't really need any magnification to see them, I find the extra designs to look just like, well, extra leaves. Not die gouges, but designs that look like they were intentionly added by someone at the mint. Really cool and although the chances are probably pretty good that many more will be found and the value of my investment will probably take a nose dive, I'm glad I picked up a set. I live in Alaska but was born in Tucson and it's nice to read about my birthplace and the hobby I love all in one sentence.

I'm interested in finding out how many of you have actually gone through bags or rolls of Wisconsin quarters only to find the normal design without any extra leaves. Also would like to know if you looked through rolls or bags that you purchased from the mint or from local banks, etc. While you're at it, let me know what part of the country you are from and if you have heard of any finds other than in the Tucson area. Thanks in advance!

Rick

Looked at the 2 Denver rolls I rec'd from mint's P/D set offering.
Both ends reflect the "normal" design.
Would I be correct to assume that I would be wasting my time to unwrap the rolls and look inside them?

I live in San Diego and check the ones I get in change. The chances are very remote I'll find one.

    BigE,

Seeing as I love nicely toned Washington quarters I have to have a "great attitude". Those colorful beauties that I collect don't come cheap but to me the price I pay is well worth it. I've had an almost complete set of blast white Washingtons in the past and my investment was a fraction of what I'm paying now. However now I find myself taking my set out to look at often and enjoying it far more. That's what it's all about, right?!?!

Don't know Bubblehead. That's part of why I've started this thread. When and if you open them let me know!
  • I've been through over $400 of Wisconsin D quarters in 3 states (MI, MN, and CA) and have not found one to date. Needless to say, I think I've got a candidate for MS69/70.

I noticed your posting on the pcgs board, and I searched approx 25 banks in Tucson, and there are no original Wisconsin rolls remaining at the banks. Both Rick Snow and Mr. Weiss have (and other collectors) thoroughly picked up all remaining bank rolls in Tucson. I have to give them credit, as they both are very reputable dealers. Also, the local media buzz has added many people in search of them.

From what I understand, it was just the original delivery (around Nov 29, 2004) of Denver quarters that the varieties are found. The banks that received the coins via Loomis Fargo trucks (Bank America and Bank One, and others) are the ones the varieties have appeared.

I have 2 sets of the varieties, and I feel fortunate.

I thought this may help you.

Would love to hear from anybody else that has done some searching...

Ok, here's another Rick Snow post on this:

Just to clear up a statement made, I have not found a single Extra leaf variety quarter! I had to buy all the ones I have. I found it pointless to look for them, as the whole town was looking. I'd rather play the role of Humbert and Kellogg to the present-day Tucson gold diggers than actually dig myself.

(btw - no more are showing up)

This whole deal is starting to sound like these things were conjured up after they left the mint like that deal with the state quarters a few years back.

As I remember it involved smoeone stamping a confederate flag on quarters that were issued to commemorate the southern states.

if you search the newsgroup RCC using state quarters altered as your search criteria you will bring it up

  • Rick, I am in Anchorage and should receive the rolls I ordered from the mint in the mail Saturday. I will let you know if I get lucky.

Haven't heard of anyone finding these varieties in any rolls or bags purchased off the U.S. Mint website. It would be great if you do find a few. Definitely would start a last minute rush to purchase those Wisconsin bags and rolls the mint offers before they are no longer available. Do believe the California quarter comes out soon so I doubt they will be for sale much longer.

Good luck with your search and let us know what you find!
  • There's a guy on eBay selling some he said he found at a bank in Kerrville, TX. There's a thread about it on this forum too.

I am in the north end of CA, I've gone thru about 20 rolls that I have acquired since they started showing up in this area. I haven't found any. I have 5 roll sets from the mint I was thinking about checking, but decided not to since I haven't heard of any being found in these sets. Its been fun looking for the varieties tho... I also bought a 3 coin set, which should be showing up here anytime. Hopefully they will be less fingerprints since they are raw and from a "gold digger" and not a collector image

  • Well after looking at 5 mint rolls of 200 mad cows and cheese wheels, I'm still without a fig leaf. Oh well it's off to the laundromat and the car wash, got some quarters to burn...LOL
