1834 Bust Quarter, Var 2, B-4

Not my coin or picture. Seller states EF-45. Do you agree? Comments and thoughts on this piece. Looks all original, nice strike, and normal wear. Seems accurately graded. Thanks, Lee

I'd say VF-35 obverse / EF-40 reverse; detail in obverse drapery is a little too soft for EF-45. Be sure to ask if there are any hairlines or signs of wiping under the toning. You can't really tell if a bust coin is truly original from a picture because hailines don't show up. From the pic, it appears to be a nice one.

Looks like a decent strike, but not XF-45. I'd go along with the VF-30-5. However, I don't think this is an "original" coin in the sense that it has never been cleaned; the surface colors are too weird. I think it was dipped or wiped or something, probably a very long time ago, and has since retoned. I'm basing this opinion on the color around the stars and rims, and the fact that the devices are too bright looking. There's no dirt in the hairlines, for example. It's not a bad looking coin; you could certainly do a lot worse as far as bust quarters go. If you like the look, go for it, but I wouldn't pay XF money, and I certainly wouldn't pay a premium for superior originality.

The B-4 is the most common variety.
