Do You Ever Look At/Evaluate Your Coins With Reveal Light Bulbs?

stmanstman Posts: 11,352 ✭✭✭✭✭
I see many tips on taking pictures that the reveal bulbs do a good job and help show the color real nicely.
When I receive a coin it usually is a matter of a few seconds/minutes and I can tell if it's a keeper.

But for a while now I wait till it's dark and I can sit in "The Chair" with my 100 watt bulb. Mainly so I can really
give the piece the evil eye before making a final buying decision. I recently picked up some 100 watt Reveal bulbs
and tried it out. I believe I can see the difference and it does indeed seem to bring out the natural color better.

Does anybody do the same? This was just an experiment as I was curious of the effect. I'm not into halogen or any of the other
lights as I'm used to a regular light and don't want to change what works for me. Any input appreciated.

BTW, so if you send me a coin these days.... it will be night time before I make a decision, image as it has been for quite some time.

Heh, my guess is quite a few folks use them for viewing but I've only seen them discussed for imaging purposes.
Sometimes it takes us old dinosaurs a while to to try something. I do like the effect they give.

What do these cost and where can you buy them?

  • I have learned to grade under the same lamps pcgs uses with the same bulbs. I am not going to try anything different.

Most use 75 watt incandescent and a few use tensor lights.

You can buy them at Kroger for about $2.50 to $4.00 for 4 bulbs.

    Walmart sells them, too.

  • I use a halogen lamp for close up examination. I often am looking for hairlines on proofs and I like the halogen best for that purpose. If a coin looks to have good color I try natural light and my overhead light. My overhead light does have Reveal bulbs in it. I also have Ott lights which are flourscent lamps that are supposed to produce natural colors. I find the Reveal bulbs to highlight the reds in a coin while the Ott light highlights the blues.

Carl you use the same proceedure I do. Nothing beats halogen lights for examing coins. I have reveal bulbs in every lamp in my house, they don't cost any more than regular incandescent bulbs. Your local grocery, walmart, etc. will sell them.
  • I use 60-watt reveal bulbs for imaging (2) and 1 60-incandescent for looking as the intensity of the reveal light hurts my eye when looking close for varieties.

I used the Reveal bulbs for almost two years. Up until recently they were the best bulbs you could buy without paying a fortune. There is now a much better light on the market that does not give off the red tint:

I usually make the "keeper" decision with natural daylight under my kitchen skylight and study/enjoy under halogen at night.

Don't forget that Reveals mask hairlines on proofs... if you're looking at a proof, you're better off with a Halogen or white light. For just looking at the color of a coin, or an MS/circ. piece, Reveals should be ok.

The way I give the evil eye..... it's pretty hard for any light to mask anything. Just ask the dealers.image

I just tried this Reveal bulb recently and noticed it does bring out the red more than a regular bulb. But also
brings out the natural colors as well. Thanks for the replies folks!
