MS or SMS on Kennedy Half...

sumduncesumdunce Posts: 1,247 ✭✭✭✭
I have a high MS graded 1965 Kennedy half that I want to crossover to PCGS. I have heard stories of how PCGS takes MS slabbed coins and sends them back with SMS grades.

How can I tell if the coin would be considered SMS or MS by PCGS.

Bottom line - you can't. If it's already in a TPG holder, try to cross it in the holder. If they think it's an SMS, it'll DNC and come back in the original holder.

    hey Sumdance

you could always try to attribute it from the Wiles book on Kennedy Half Dollars, but the Mint probably struck business coins with used SMS dies which would carry the same diagnostics. it's also no guarantee that just because you get a coin from a roll that it's a non-SMS. the Mint did a pretty complete job making things difficult for us. attribution by another service doesn't really help PCGS decide, either.

i think it's funny that about all we can tell for sure with the SMS issues is that the ones in the SMS Sets are SMS's!!

So if I submit the coin and put the min grade as MSXX then PCGS will not holder it as SMSXX?
