Auction catalogs

I've read some posts about the auction catalogs being used as reference material. Would someone please explain this and possibly post a picture of an auction page?

Thanks,

A well catalogued and photographed coin is helpful in that it will give:

A detailed description of the coin
    Any detracting or identifiable marks
    Color/toning
    Planchet quality
    Attribution/variety
    Rarity
    A breif history
    Populations
    Condition Census
    etc.....

They also provide a price history of coins sold at auction. Helpu for plate matching, to track particular coins. You can also tell if a coin has been played with to get it upgraded.

Plus the exercise benefit moving and lifting them off your shelves. A years worth from the major auctions must weigh at least 50 - 70 pounds.
