Declared value ?

ok im gearing up to send in my first cards. a few questions...

1) Declared Value of cards: Is this a guess or should I use SMR 8,9,10 values based on what i think the card will grade at? which leads to # 2 question.

2) When figuring postage for returning the cards to me how do i figure the declared value if i have no idea what the cards will be graded at thus their value? Use same value as question #1? ex. back of form says 1-8 cards declared value 1001-5000 cost 16.60. Just go with that to be safe? and i assume thats for all my 6 cards not for each card?

3) My first submission i get 6 free grades. How/where do i mark this on the form? The CARD GRADING section of the form has no place for "free" grades. I assume i check "Regular" but don't know for sure.

4) Packing: PSA says to use a mylar sleeve then into the card savers. I dont have any mylar sleeves, can i buy them at walll mart ? or can i pack them right into the card saver II's

Well thats all for now :-)

Thanks for helpin a brother out. I really appreciate it!

    1) Use SMR for what you think the cards will grade. If you feel that the cards will be worth $3000 to you after they are graded, then use a declared value of $3000. If you send the cards registered, the extra charge for increased value is minimal.

    2) See #1. The shipping costs are for all six cards.

    3) You should have received a special form for the six freebies along with several regular forms.

    4) You don't have to use mylar sleeves, in fact, if you use card saver II's, it is difficult to use mylar sleeves. PSA recommends mylar sleeves in addition to card saver I's. I believe they have a disclaimer if you use II's stating that they won't be liable for any damage.

Also, if you are sending your cards registered, you cannot use slick-backed tape. The post office has brown paper tape to use. That is how I do it.

  • Hi, I just went through my first submission process. I signed up and then waited for them to send me my introductory package. This package included 6 card savers. You should be able to pick up mylar sleeves really cheap at any sports card place. The introductory package also gave clear instructions on how to submit using your free submission and what to indicate on the forms. I assume you haven't received this yet. If this is the case, I'd wait to receive it before submitting.

I can't help you with the declared value. I estimated on the low side. I guess it comes down to how much you are willing to risk for insurance purposes. For example if you declare that they are worth less then they are you may lose some $$ if they get lost in the mail. On the other hand, if you overestimate the value, you will pay more for insurance. I went with the lower declared value and put my trust in Fedex/USPS not losing my package.

    Hope this helps.
  • thanks guys.

Pretty good info given prior, Chicago 111.

I am from the Chicago area and yes, you can get card sleeves at the Wal-Mart, however whenever possible try to patronize a local sportscard shop. The internet and big shows are making them a rare business nowadays.

    Good luck on the subs.

A person is not likely going to get more than the card cost them plus grading fees if the cards are lost by USPS no matter what the declared value of the card is. That is if you can squeeze any money out of them at all.

Luckily Registered mail seldom has any problems.
