Thank you for the welcome. Many requested pics so I'll put up a few. Since threads seem to drop like rocks in the ocean here, I'll only put up a few at a time.

First let me say that this coin does look nice, BUT, IMHO its

1. Slightly overgraded
2. Damaged (I think its been pecked with the tip of a knife)

The increase in size also seems to magnify the probems.

I have seen worse looking coins (less eye appeal to me) in PCGS holders. I just wonder if the date rarity is enough to overlook the flaws or is this something may have been unintentionally overlooked by ANACS? I'm not upset at all with the purchase price of $1400 since I don't think I could replace it with anything better for that price.

  • Although the ticks are slightly distracting, i wouldn't deem it unacceptable for this level of circulation. I like the look of it and by the pictures i think VG10 is fair. Nice coin!!

    *Edit* How is the reverse??

I think VG10 is a possibility. Need to see the reverse, though. Marks are consistent with grade.

full rims, complete and clear "Liberty" with no major marks and nice, even wear---if the reverse looks the same, it's a nice coin and graded properly. looking at a picture from PhotoGrade shows an almost identical Morgan obverse for Very Good, though the date is 1879.

A little dark for my tastes. I see no evidence of any of the 4 lines in the 2 cotton bolls (which I would like to see parts of at least a couple of lines for VG10) and I barely see full separation of the 2 cotton bolls (which I like to see for VG8). The rim is full which is in its favor. The surface marks themselves aren't that bothersome to me since this coin did see quite a lot of circulation. Even at a VG8 grade (which is where I would come down on this one), your still way ahead of the game based on where the prices are at now.

i think that just on detail & surface quality alone, the coin is a hair weak for vg-10.

otoh, anyone coughing up the smack for a coin like this probably knows what the he11 he's doing, so it wouldn't really matter.

the "damage" you refer to is meaningless at this grade level, it doesn't affect the grade at all for me. if it were graded ms-63, or even xf-45, then it would be an issue, but i EXPECT a coin of f-12 or lower to have battle scars.
