Anyone here ever sniped a Teletrade auction?

seanqseanq Posts: 8,652 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have my eye on a coin, I'm wondering how late I can place my max bid and still be assured the Teletrade computers will recognize it. The auction closes at 10PM Eastern tonight. Anyone got any pointers or horror stories of placing a bid just a little to close to the end?

If TT would offer up a coin I wanted, I'd try to snipe it. But I haven't seen one there in literally years that I would buy.

This one. I've always wanted a coin with warm, corroded surfaces. image

They NEVER close on time. It'll be anywhere from a minute to three minutes late - sometimes longer. I continually refresh the track and bid page, then mouseover the "update bids" button to check the time at the lower left of my screen. Then I lay in a bid as close to supposed closing time as possible and hope for the best. More times than not they run over and somebody else wins.

  • I was watching this one and the price hadn't moved in the last two hours, so with about 10 seconds left on the clock I hit the next bid increment and won it! Probably the lowest cost Silver Eagle in my collection:

Maybe not sniping in the conventional sense, but it felt good nonetheless!

What Russ said ... they always run over, unpredictably so.

Every teletrade auction is a snipe at the last possible second... lol

Just open two windows, both being logged into Teletrade... if your first bid doesn't work, have the second ready to go. You can see what time teletrade time is as the page reloads.

    Hope this helps!

They use to close at 10:00:59 - not sure about recently

Make sure you are willing to bid 3 or 4 higher bid increments than present - or will probably not beat current/reserve

Make sure you have the correct value - one of their acceptable bid amounts

Make sure you are not high bidder at the time - you can not increase your bid in last hour if you are high bidder

iIt has been awhile since I have bid - info may not be current
  • I have but I always used the phone instead of the computer, works faster then online.

Well, it just happened to me. Coin was at $210 up to the end. I laid in a max of $280 at about 10 seconds AFTER 10 PM Eastern and then started refreshing. Friggin' auction went on for another 45 seconds and I got out-bid.

Well I placed my max bid around 9:59:45. I was the high bidder well under my max when the page went away. Cross your fingers for me...

Oh... here is the real link to the coin I wanted - clipped 1918-S Standing Liberty Quarter. These are rarer than hen's teeth!

Ouch, Russ. That was a pretty one, too.

So is it safe to assume at 10:35PM that "15 minutes after close of auction" is not the actual time the final prices are loaded? I'm dying over here, I wanna know if I won.

    Sean,

Just click on account info and check for auctions won. If you got it, it'll be in there by now.

Ahhhh... I was still reloading the tracking page.

Final bid was $85. My max was almost twice that. imageimageimage

    Russ,

So you were bidding on that AH too? I didn't get it. Not aggressive enough.

Yep. And now I see it hammered for a stinking $20 more than my max. I have a hunch I know who picked it off.

Same thing has happened to me time and time again. For example, about 3-4 weeks ago with only about 2 minutes to go. I was bidding on a 1969 Kennedy in 69DCAM-beautiful coin. The price WAS $80, CHEAP!! I HAD to bid 2 increments OVER present bid(don't know why you can't go just one), I bid $120. Kept refreshing the bids and with apparently less than 15 seconds to go, my bid FINALLY showed up-$85! WOW, I was going to win this cheap! My heart was pumping. I continued to recycle the darned thing and all of a sudden-BANG!!! After the auction was SUPPOSED to end- another sniper got it for $125!!! How did they do that? I thought you had to bid AT LEAST 2 INCREMENTS above the bid. I had a bid in for $120 but lost to a bid of $125! I was mad, but I guess someone else was happier. I'm not against sniping, BUT, I was bummed out that I lost such a nice coin by such a small margin. There were 3 of the ame coin that night for sale but this was the nicest of the 3, I believe the other 2 coins in 69DCAM actually DID sell for the $85. Russ, was that you? If so, congratulations! Maybe next time...... LOL It was only a "spare" anyway so it wasn't that bad. Ray

One thing I noticed tonight was that, unlike eBay, there was quite a bit of lag between the bid being accepted and showing up in the tracking history. I panicked a bit because I had one window open with a comment that my bid was accepted, while inthe other I kept reloading the tracker and it wouldn't show me as the high bidder. raycyca, it's possible someone else came in at $100 before you put in your $120 bid and you just couldn't see it yet.

Based on the feedback I got in this thread, I didn't monkey around and put my absolute max in about a minute before the end. If someone was crazy enough to outbid me at that point, more power to them.
