Relocating with coins

I will be moving across the country. I will be driving about 2500 miles with my furnature and coins and will be making several stops along the way in motels to sleep. Any suggestions on how to travel safely with my collection?

I don't think I'd feel comfortable traveling cross country with my coins. I think I'd mail them across, registered.
  • Good idea, can I get $100,000 insurance from regestered mail?

I moved with my coins a few months ago. They never left my sight. I brought them in with my at the hotel room at night. Lots of dealers travel with their coins to shows.

You didn't specify the amount in your original post, so don't be surprised when you get inapplicable answers.

Wow, someone makes a suggestion, and ...

I wouldn't expect someone with 100k in coins to be driving his furniture across country and staying in motels either.

I just posed this question several months ago. But it was directed at the Open Houses we held before the move. I was concerned about leaving my coins in the house when there was an Open House. However, the coins were not in sight, and most were in 3-ring binders on bookshelves. So I don't think anyone would think to snope there.

As for the move, I ended up putting some coins in a few safety deposit boxes, as my move was only 30 miles. I also left several boxes of my coins with a trusted friend. Still, won't help maybe in a move across the country. Depending on how much there is, I would probably take the box(es) in with me every night, and not let them out of my sight.

    From the USPS website:

"Items you send with Registered Mail are placed under tight security from the point of mailing to the point of delivery, and insured up to $25,000 against loss or damage"

So, if you want coverage for $100,000 in value, you need to break it up into at least 4 different registered packages.

I'd also recommend that you be extremely cautious about discussing this (type of collection or value) with anyone in close proximity of your current or future residence.

Yeah! They'll even wrap your coins for you! image
  • Pretty much common sense. I'd keep the coins with me at all times. When that's not possible (checking in/out of motels, eating, etc.) I'd keep them on the floorboard or locked in the truck in a non-descript box. Keep your Red Book, for example, boxed out of sight along with any other items that could tell someone you have something valuable. Always make sure the doors are locked and that you keep the keys with yourself at all times. Stay out of areas that look like trouble. Don't get separated from any travelling companions you may have. Keep a cell phone well charged in case you need help. You don't want to break down, make sure the vehicle you're driving is reliable to make that kind of trip. Read a map, write down directions and make sure you know your route from start to finish. Lastly, if you have one, keep a handgun close by.
